Triplett III Registration for the 19S3 Big Eight Conference on Black Student Government is below what was expected but a sizable attendance is still anticipated. The sixth annual conference, the only one of its kind in the United States, will begin Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the Nebraska Union and continue through Saturday. Charlene Maxey, chairwoman ot the conlerence s housing, food and registration committees, said about 100 people had registered as of Thursday. Those registra tions included representatives from Creighton. UNL, Hutchinson Junior College in Kansas, Mankato State, Nebraska Wesleyan and the University of Iowa. "Most of the Big Eight schools register when they get here because of school restrictions on mailing money," Maxey said. ljst year's conference in Ames, Iowa, drew about 200 people, Maxey said. She said more people are expected for this year's conference because of UNL's central location. "Oklahoma usually has the biggest delegation. . .they send about 35 to 45 people," she said. "When we start adding Oklahoma and Missouri and those other schools, we should be up around 300, and 400 would not be an unrealistic figure." The registration fee is S25 for the workshops and meals, with an additional cost added for housing accommodations for outol-state participants. The Hilton Hotel has been reserved for 400 people this weekend, Maxey said. Registrations from UNL students were low, Maxey said. She blamed that on a lack of enthusiasm generated from the UNL student body about the conference. "We are expecting a lot of UNL students to sign up at the last minute," Maxey said. Among the UNL students attending are five football players, whom Coach Tom Osborne is sponsoring. "I have really been surprised and pleased with the support Coach Osborne has given us," Maxey said. The dinners, which will be catered by the Nebraska Union, will include a steak dinner on Saturday before Tony Brown, host of the PBS television series Tony Brown's Journal, speaks at 8 p.m. Maxey said the committee advertised the conference in Black Collegian magazine. That ad resulted in calls from North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Detriot about registration instructions. Veteran sulP commit DRecIoW For. THE NUM&ER To CALL To KEfCK f VA REPRESENTATIVE.
