SwHinra teams, coaches look iomavd
coMldmily to meet-iMed weekend
Hv Mark Quandah!
Nebraska's men's 3nd women's swimming teams will
Juve a busy weekend, as they travel to Omaha 1 riJay to
battle UNO and Northern Iowa, and then return to the
Hob Devaney Spoils Center pool for a 1:30 pjn. meet
apinst Oklahoma Saturday.
Junior Kevin Weires didn't seem to be too concerned
with the UNO-UN1 meet.
"We should win th3t one pretty well," he said.
Weires said team members would use the meet to get
their swims set for the Big Iiight Meet March 3 through 5
in Ames, Iowa.
Coach Cal Bentz said although the seniors will not
make the trip to Omaha, "Each of the swims are going
to make a contribution as far as the goals and objectives
of the team."
Bentz said he was especially pleased with the fact that
the men were coming together more as a team.
"We've brought the individuals in to being more of a
group," he said. "We feel we're right where we want to
be, right where wc planned to be."
Weires agreed, saying "We're right on schedule."
He said the Huskers were planning on beating the
Sooners on Saturday.
"We've got the upper hand, anyway," Weires said.
Nebraska women's swim coach Ray lluppert said he
felt reasonably confident that the team could run its
Big Eight string of victories to three in a row - that is, if
Oklahoma cooperates on Saturday.
"The team members feel confident in themselves."
lluppert said. "They're showing improvement, and
swimming (easier as we get closer to the Big Eights."
He said he thought that Friday's UNL-L'NT meets will
serve a good purpose because it will give the athletes an
opportunity to swim in their fourth or fifth events.
He said that was especially important because the
women's next event after Oklahoma will be the Big
light championships in Norman. Okla., Feb. 24 to 26".
The coach said the whole team wants to do well on
Saturday in order to send seniors Stacia Porter, Rene
Sullivan and Shcrri Hayward out on a dual winning note.
"We're swimming really well," lluppert said, "but
there's still a long way to go."
Diving coach Jeff Huber said this Saturday's meet is
going to be a good match up, "especially for the women."
He said he thought Oklahoma's former Big Eight one
meter champion, Mary Kay Gerhard t, would give the
Husker women the most problems.
On the men's side, Huber said he is going with Husker

Eric Ogmbene, Dave Goodwin and Reynaldo Castro
will be out of town during Saturday's meet. But Huber
wasn't worried.
"Mike's diving really well," he said. "He's always
responded well under pressure."
Coach Bentz said that, overall, Oklahoma has good
people.
"But they haven't been as tough as they have been
in the past," Bentz said.
He said only one tiling is certain about Saturday's
contest.
"They didn't come up here to get beat."
