It prolongs being single and is a time for partners to adjust to each other. For a marriage in the 80's to survive, there must be more equality and sharing, McFwen said. "There should be a re-evaluation of marriage every five years," she said. Couples should evaluate to see if their in dividual wants and expectations are being met. McFwen said she thinks marriage will continue but in a different form. "People move from one to the next marriage thinking it's the partners fault," she said. More people should seek adult relationship counseling." Crockett said egualitarian marriages are increasing. "It's a middle class thing," he said. Nicholas said marriages in the 80's have a high degree of partnership and equality. "Both partners are accepting the idea that they pull better in a double harness," she said. Nicholas said the idea of premarital sex doesn't make much difference in a relation ship. "It lets a person know if their partner snores and what she looks like in curlers," she said. "1 don't think it adds to a marri age. 1 have nothing for or against it." If the couple is mature and can handle it, premarital sex is a good thing, McFwen said. On the other hand, if a couple is not mature, it's not a good thing. It depends on both people. McFwen said many couples who live to gether and have premarital sex feel guilt about living together and this leads to a crumbling of a marriage. Age also plays a big part in the success or failure of a new marriage. McFwen said people getting married are older than they" used to be. Twenty-three is the average age of people getting married today, she said. "There is also a small percent of women getting pregnant younger. Values for women are changing." Basic attitudes for marriages are the same, Crockett said. "It gives personal support and love." Some religions require couples planning to get married to first take some kind of premarital relationship counseling. The Catholic faith has such classes. McEwen said the classes, called Pre canna classes, are not manditory, but are strongly suggested. It gives the couple a chance to discuss personality traits and expectations for the marriage while working with a priest, McEwen said.
