Monday, January 17, 1933 Daily Nebraskan 9 CycIonc-sbbTr byfrea throve AtfeffJSaS dominates 91.9 psrcentege S3ts nsiv record By Ward W. Triplett 111 When the Big Eight conference game between the Iowa State and Nebraska women's basketball teams began, only 200 or 5.0 people weie there. Those 200 saw the Huskers take a early five-point lead onJy to trail by one point on four occasions. By halftime, about 500 saw Iowa State lip in a basket at the buzzer to cut the Husker halftime lead to four points. But during the 20-minute ha fume, the people drawn by the men's final non-conference game against Southwest Missouri State began filing steadily into the Bob Devaney Sports Center. That seemed to trigger the Huskers, as they out scored the Cyclones 6743 in the se cond half to win IOS-80, improving their Big Eight record to 2-0 and their overall mark to 1 1 -3. Nebraska Coach Colleen Matsuhara stopped short of calling it the best half, possibly game, her team lias played this year. But consider the 27 for 35 shooting in the second half. At the line, the Hus kers were 34 of 37. While the 63.8 field goal percentage barely missed a record, the 91.9 free throw performance did set a new imrk. After Nebraska's Debra Powell scored the game's first five points; the Cyclones brought center Tanya Burns off the bench. She promptly scored four points and assisted Jolene Leseman on another to give the Cyclones their first lead. Nebraska retook the lead at J 1-10, and the teams traded leads until KcIIi Benson connected on a lavup to give Ne braska a 29-26 lead with 4:24 to play in the first half. Jacque Shackelford scored between four Iowa State free throws before the Huskers tallied eight straight points for their largest lead of the half at 39-31. Burns then scored six for the Cy clones wliile Nebraska's Terri Parriot hit two more free throws So account for the halftime total. In the second half, the Huskers gra dually moved away from the Cyclones. Nebraska took a 10-point lead at 14:25, and increased that to 63-49 with 12:51 left. The Huskers then showed off the best of their various fast breaks, outseoring Iowa State 20-11 during the next five minutes to take a commanding 23-point lead. The closest the Cyclones" could get from then on was 19. Matsuhara said the best part of the game was the Huskers' effective use of a full-court zone press in the second half. 4,In die first half, we couldn't use the press because Deb (Powell) is really cru cial to that, and she was on the bench in foul trouble," Matsuhara said. Powell led Nebraska with 21 points: Chris Leigh added 16, and Crystal Coleman also had 16. The Cyclones were paced by Burns' 23 points and 1 1 rebounds, while Cerita Cain added 19. , - - ; - i . ........ .
