11 Friday, January 14, 1933 Daily Nebraskan Record holder By Jeff Korbelik If you happen to wander into the track facilities in the Bob Devaney Sports Cen ter don't worry that something is wrong with your eyes if all that you see is red, white and gray blurs. Those "blurs" are simply the Cornhusker men's track team preparing for another indoor track season. As the blurs slow down to where you can focus and distinguish faces, you may recognize some of them and see many new ones. "We are looking for a good year," Coach Frank Sevigne said. "We lost some good men but hopefully we can replace them with a few of the good young people. It is the age-old situation of trying to replace the old with the new." The Huskers will be led by their 1 983 senior co-captains Mike Cielocha and Jon Jones. Cielocha was an NCAA qualifier in the 440-yard dash, the 600-meter run and the mile relay. He has the third fastest 440 and the second fastest 400 meter in the Nebraska record books. "Cielocha is an all-around sprinter who has the ability to compete in five different events," said John Glenn, Sports Information Office Student Assistant. Jones is the Husker's double-duty man. He competes in both the long and S set tvack pace high jumps and the sprints. He has the third best long jump in Nebraska history and finished fourth in the long jump at last year's Big Eight indoor meet. Nebraska will be supplemented with a strong field of veterans including senior Charles Lawrence, junior Wade Harring ton, sophomore Mark Gunby, junior Marc Adam, sophomore Tom Hoffman, and sophomore Dennis Wallace. "Wallace could be a major point pro ducer for the Huskers," Glenn said. He has the second fastest 440 in Nebraska history, the third best time for the 300 meter run and the record for the 200 meter run. Nebraska will send eight people to compete in the Eastman Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., scheduled for Jan. 14 and 15. On Jan. 29 the Huskers will host Southern Illinois. "They are perennially a tough team with some tough individuals," Sevigne said. "They win the Missouri Valley Con ference hands down every year and they are way up there nationally." Looking ahead to the Big Eight Con ference, Sevigne said, "The conference is extremely tough this year. It is balanc ing out, and it is not just a one, two or three team race. It has become an eight team race." Evemlf ciatis huri women's track By Betsy Miller The Nebraska women's track team faces a few major changes in NCAA indoor track rules that may hamper its effective ness. This year the NCAA has eliminated five events in the indoor track meets. Among those five were races in wliich the team excelled last year. The Cornhuskers, winners of the Asso ciation of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national meet last year, have switched to the NCAA for the first time this year. Eliminated events include the 300-yard run (in which Nebraska's Merlene Ottey has the collegiate record), the pentathlon and the 880-yard relay. Coach Gary Pepin said his team will try to put forth its best competitive effort despite the loss of some of the Huskers' best events. The restructuring of the NCAA indoors events was not a decision made by the coaches, he added. "It really hurt our team and I know it hurt a lot of other teams," Pepin said. The rules now call for a 60-yard sprint followed by the 440-yard run. All sprints that fall between those distances, includ ing Ottey's specialty, the 300, have been eliminated, Terry Beek, UNL director of Women's Sports Information, said. "We're definitely taking a beating," he said. The second-place indoor finisher behind Nebraska in 1982, Tennessee, is strong in the middle-distance runs, which haven t been eliminated from the meet schedules, Beek said. Thus, the Huskers may meet a stiff challenge from the Volunteers this year indoors. Pepin said that the Huskers' main weaknesses at this time are in the long distance events. The taam also seems weaker in the shot-put and discus areas when compared to other top teams around the nation, he said. In addition, Pepin said, his team is young. Karen Wood, a shot-putter and discus thrower from Carson Citv. Nev.. is the only senior on the squad. The indoor team has been strong for the Huskers recently, finishing third nationally in 1980, fourth in 1981 and earning the title last year. Outdoors, the team finished seventh in the AIAW meet in 1980, sixth in 1981 and seventh last year, the first time the outdoor meet was supervised by the NCAA. Pepin said a team goal during the outdoor season, which begins March 26, is improving on last year's seventh place standing. The first meet of the indoor season will be the Eastman Invitational on Fri day and Saturday in Johnson City, Tenn. The first home meet for the Huskers is the Husker Pentathlon, Jan. 28 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. e o o o Continued from Page 10 Now, the spotlight dance of the year. The Battle of the Sunbelt.
