Annual holiday dinners
have become tradition
in dormitory cafeterias
UNL students living in residence halls were served a
bit of Christmas Tuesday night when they had their
annual Holiday dinner.
The dinners have become a tradition at UNL because
of student demand, according to Doug Rix, the food
manager for all residence halls.
"It is something that serves as a change of pace,"
Rix said. "The end of the semester is a time when stu
dents are under a lot of pressure. The dinner helps them
to relax for a little while."
Steak and shrimp were served as the entree for the
holiday meal this year. That, plus the dessert, were
standard items in all residence halls. But variations were
made in the other dishes at each hall.
Each residence hall decorates the eating areas accord
ing to a theme students in that hall have chosen, Rix
said. He said this makes the meal more special for the
students in each complex.
Dorothy Welchoff, food manager at Harper Hall,
said Harper made its meal formal, including table
cloths and eating by candlelight.
Rix said Selleck Hall's tradition over the years has
been to serve the meal buffet style, much like it is served
in England.
"There will be waiters and waitresses and entertain
ment. Students volunteer time to do this, so it doesn't
add to the costs of the meal," Rix said.
About 4 5,000 meals were prepared for the Tuesday
night feast, according to Rix. He said that is a little more
than is prepared for most meals.
"There is usually a 10 to 12 percent absenteeism rate
at dinnertime," he said. "But there are people who will
come to this meal because it is a special occasion but
wouldn't have come under normal circumstances."
Happy holidays
This is the magic time of year. Even with the
pressure of finals, bleak economic news and world
tension Christmas is still able to warm the hearts
of people everywhere.
We at the Daily Nebraskan hope that this
Christmas will be a time for friends and family,
a time for joy and some much-needed relaxation.
God Bless you all and Merry Christmas.
