Husker wives looking forward to sunny Miami
By Janet H. Chu
Everyone knows what the NU football players do when
they go to Miami for the Orange Bowl, but who knows
what their wives do? Well, they don't sit at home in Ne
braska and watch the game on television.
The wives will leave for Miami Dec. 24 with their
husbands and coaches and coaches' wives on two charter
ed airplanes. There are approximately 25 married foot
ball players this year.
Laura Mathison, wife of reserve quarterback Bruce
Mathison, went to the Orange Bowl last year with other
football players' wives. She said she is very excited about
this year's trip.
"1 can't wait to go back," she said. Some of the high
lights of last year's trip included a fashion show with a
champagne luncheon, a concert by the group The
Spinners, a visit to Marine World, shopping and sight
seeing, she said.
George Sullivan, head athletic trainer at UNL, said this
year's itinerary will be much the same. There will be a
dinner on a cruiser ship, trips to see Jai Alai games, the
Florida Keys and Freeport in the Bahamas, as well as a
dinner at the airport.
Although the itinerary is quite full, many of the items
are optional so any of the wives can have quite a bit of
free time. Mathison said she would like to relax by the
pool this year and just soak in the sun. She also said she
would like to take a day to visit Orlando and the Epcot
Center and maybe Disney World.
Mathison said that they do not get to spend much time
with their husbands during the day because they are meet
ing with the coaches or practicing. The evenings are

A few days before the game, however, the men have a
10:30 p.m. curfew, Mathison said.
Since they will spend most of the holiday in Florida,
Mathison said she will miss spending Christmas with their
son Ryan, 2Vi, who will stay with her parents.
She said that last year there was a big dinner for all the
players, coaches and their wives on Christmas Day.
Laura Campbell, wife of punter Grant Campbell, also
has been to the Orange Bowl before and said she is look
ing forward to going back. She said she would like to take
advantage of the sun and the warm weather and the free
time while she is in Florida. Unlike the Mathisons, how
ever, Campbell said her family makes Christmas plans
around the Orange Bowl game.
Laura Mathison and Laura Campbell are considered
veterans of the Orange Bowl scene. But many wives will
be going for the first time. This will be Teresa Lyday's
first taste of the 'Orange Bowl, her first chance to ride a
plane, and the opportunity to see the ocean for the first
time all wrapped up in one trip. Wife of Cornhusker
cornerback Allen Lyday, she has a lot to look forward to,
and said she is excited about the trip. She also said that
this will be her first time without a "regular Christmas."
Newlywed Merry Johnson, wife of center Brad John
son, said she is also excited to go to the Orange Bowl.
After having a taste of warm weather in the midst of
winter in Hawaii last week, she said she is ready to go
back for more warm weather and a good tan as well as
taking advantage of the other benefits.
Although the women have a full schedule throughout
their stay, Mathison said, there is still time for close
friendships to develop because the women are all in the
same situation. She said she has made some close friend
friendships with the other women and is looking for
ward to spending time with them again.
