UNL professors developing new disc-computer system By Chris Welsch Three UNL professors are developing an instructional system unlike any created before. The system would combine a laser disc player with a microcomputer. The system would be the ultimate in inter active education, William Leonard, associate professor in the School of Life Sciences, said. Leonard is also the school's instruc tional coordinator. The Nebraska ETV Network created the hardware necessary to link the laser disc player and the computer and has patented the process, Leonard said. Robert Fuller and David Brooks are the other two professors involved in the project. The project is funded by a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Fuller is a professor in the physics de partment and director of the ADAPT program. Brooks is a chemistry professor and an instructional coordinator for the chemistry department. - Leonard said he is concerned that lecture alone isn't always sufficient for teaching. "I would like to use a joystick so the student can draw graphs on the computer screen," he said. The system will be in the Life Sciences Resource Room in Manter Hall 118. Leonard said the Resources Room is an alternative to lecture. The room has a wide variety of science information. Inidividual students or classes can use the room's two Apple II computers and several video players and slide pro jectors. Continued on Page 6 Ken Morehead I Ski .
