Is it live, or is it rebrowkast?
1 refuse to write about those classless idiots who ran
onto the football field before the NU-OU game had
ended. I don't have an opinion on it.
And I'm not going to write about Randall "Tex" Cobb
blocking Larry Holmes' punches with his face. I think
Howard Cosell said it all . . . and more.
We all know the National Football League is back in
1 Bill Allen
inaction, at least until Friday.
And nobody cares that the Edmonton Eskimos, led by
quarterback Warren Moon, won the Gray Cup, Canada's
Super Bowl.
Instead, I'm going to write about something that's been
avoided a long time.
UNL has taken advantage of women's sports. 1 know I
have. ' '
How many of you readers have neglected to attend a
women's sporting event? I know I have.
How many of you have thought 'that football and
gymnastics were the only championship sports at UNL? I
know I have.
This all became clear to me this last weekend.
I was watching a telecast of the Big Eight women's
volleyball championship on the Nebraska ETV Network.'
It was exciting "and the Huskers were absolutely awe
some. They won the first two sets, (or is it games1?), and lost
the third before falling behind in the fourth. It was really
tense for a while but they pulled it out to win the confer
ence championship for the seventh straight year.
Immediately after watching the telecast 1 told a friend
the results. He laughed, and told me the championship
was played two weeks ago, and I had been watching an
NETV rebroadcast.
I was dumfounded. (Actually, I don't know what dum
founded is, but doesn't it sound good?)
Here was an instance of Coach Terry Pettit leading
a team to its seventh straight championship and I wasn't
sure of it until two weeks after the fact.
Oh, I'm sure it was reported in the Daily Nebraskan.
Probably in a prominent place, too . . . like under a story
about what the football team had for breakfast three days
after a big game.
Granted, volleyball isn't the national pastime that foot
ball is, and there is nothing too exciting about a group of
fans swarming on the court and tearing down a volleyball
net, but these women do deserve more student respect.
Ask yourself these five questions:
1 . Did you know the volleyball team won its seventh
straight Big Eight championship?
2. Do you really care to know the shoe size of every
member of the football team?
3. Are Phyllis George, Cathy Rigby and Brent Mus
berger just used as "token" women .on sports television?
4. Instead of attending a women's athletic event, would
you rather eat quiche?
5. Do you know the name of the two leading scorers
on the women's basketball team? We have a women's
basketball team?
If you answered "no" to four or more of those ques
tions perhaps ycu should consider more support of
women's sports at UNL, and attend the volleyball game
Saturday against Penn State in the first round of the
NCAA tournament.
Of course, the only response 1 really expect is a letter
to the editor from someone saying he really does care that
the Eskimos won the cup.
Don't end up in my position. Today I can't watch a
sporting event without asking myself ... is it live, or is it
NETV?
NU still ranked third
Nebraska held onto its No. 3 position in both of
the wire, service football polls this week. Georgia
and Penn State continue to rank ahead of the Corn
huskers in both polls.
NU received two first-place votes in The
Associated Press rankings and three No. 1 votes by
United Press International.
Nebraska's Orange Bowl opponent, Louisiana
State, is No. 13 in both golls.

The University of Texas women's
basketball team, runner-up in the AIAW
bar.ketball tournament last year and
ranked fifth in the NCAA this yar, is
the favorite to win this weekend's Ne
braska Invitational tournament.
Nebraska, , Indiana and Washington
round out the field. But Nebraska Coach
Colleen Matsuhara said the Longhorns
have to be consfdered the favorite.
"They are a very deep and balanced
ball club," Matsuhara said. "They return
everybody back from last year and are
very, very talented."
The Longhorns finished 354 last year.
Their only game, so far this season was
a victory against the Republic of China
national team.
Texas is led by Annette Smith, a 5-10
forward. Smith paced the Longhorns in
scoring (19.3) and rebounding (9.3) last
year. Matsuhara said Texas also has several
talented players in the backcourt.
But Matsuhara said her main concern
is the game against Washington, the Hus
kers' first-round opponent. Washington's
size inside could cause problems for the
shorter Huskers, she said.
Liz Chicane, Leteia Hughley and Pat
Adams are players to watch for Washing
ton, she said. Overall, the Huskies are
more experienced than the Huskers, she
said. Eight of the 12 tlusker players are
underclassmen.
Hoosier standouts include Linda Cun
ningham, Denise Jackson and Rachelle
Bostic. Cunningham, a 5-8 guard, is a good
shooter, Matsuhara said. Jackson and
Bostic "both go to the boards well,"
she added.
It will be important for the Huskers
to apply defensive pressure throughout the
game, Matsuhara said.
"We're going to have to press," she
said.
Matsuhara said this year's tournament,
sponsored by Coca-Cola and Converse,
will showcase some good basketball.
The tournament opens Friday at 6 p.m.
with Texas meeting Indiana, and Nebraska
facing Washington at 8 p.m. Play resumes
Saturday with a consolation game at 6 p.m.
and the championship game at 8 p.m. All
games will be played at the Bob Devaney
Sports Center.
