Rainbows .end conference play without pot of
gold.
ByTadStryker
Hawaii football came crashing back to
earth this year after finishing 9-2 and
being ranked as high as 16th nationally in
1981.
Rainbow Coach Dick Tomey said that
although his team played its best game of
the year last week against Air Force, he is
disappointed with the Rainbows' 64
record and the season overall
"The last couple of years we've been in
the thick of the conference race," Tomey
said. "This year, we're not playing or
coaching as well."
Hawaii is coming off a 45-21 whipping
of Air Force. The Rainbows held the
Falcons wishbone running attack to only
156 yards, but Tomey was not enthusiastic
about his defense.
"We've given up a lot of big plays," he
said, "The Air Force game was by far the
best defensive game played this year.
"I feel that we have been capable of a
good game, but we hadn't been able to get
it out of our people," Tomey said. "But
certainly we realize that playing well
against Air Force is not the same as playing
well against Nebraska."
The Hawaii players have not been
obsessed with the Nebraska game all year,
Tomey said.
"I don't think this game has necessarily
been a special game to them," he said. "I
think they look forward to every game.
"Our conference is not as strong
throughout as the Big Eight. We don't
know how our players will stack up. We'll
have to see by thi game," Tomey said.
"It's a special challenge - nothing more
than that."
The Rainbow offense has come together
at the end of the season. Senior tailback
Anthony Edgar scored on runs of 60, 70
and 1 yards to lead the way against Air
Force.
Tnmw said the Rainbows have been a
running team during the years, but that
they've been passing more this season.
Senior quarterback Bernard Quarles has
completed about 58 percent of his passes
with very few interceptions, Tomey said.
The Rainbow offensive line is "as good
as we've had here in my six years," he said.
Tomey also was pleased with his kicking
game.
"We have one of the best kicking games
in the nation," he said. The Rainbows are
solid in placekicking, punting and cover
age, and block a lot of kicks, Tomey said.
Wrestler makes, a name for himself
By Kevin Warneke
Gary Albright has made a name for himself.
Despite being injured and not having completed a
match this year, the UNL heavyweight wrestler is current
ly ranked fourth in the collegiate wrestling rankings.
Albright was injured in the Great Rains Open Nov. 13.
While wrestling in the finals he tore the ligaments inside
his right knee between the bones,
Albright said he hopes to start practicingln two weeks
and hopes to begin competition at the beginning of the
year.
"If I'm ready 1 would like to wrestle against Iowa State
on Dec. 18," Albright said. "Their heavyweight, Ray Cole,
is rated second, but he shouldn't be. He's not that good."
Albright tried to wrestle in the Oklahoma dual Nov. 19
but had to forfeit because he felt his knee give way.
"A minute into the match my opponent was stalling
and then he shot at me and 1 felt my knee give," he said.
"If I had been 100 percent, I could have pinned him."
According to Albright, it's not the injury but the wait
ing that is the hardest part.
"It makes me kind of jealous, i want to be in there,"
he said. "I've worked hard to gel my position and then
this injury conies along and it's something you can't
control."
Both Albright and Coach Bob Fehrs said that the
injury shouldn't cause any ill-effects in the latter part of
the season.
"It shouldn't have any detrimental effects if his re
habilitation goes well," Fehrs said.
"I don't think it should have any bad effects. The only
thing that matters is the Big Eight and national champion
ships," Albright said. "You can go into those not having
won a match and still win it all."
"The only thing I'll have to do is to get back into
shape, and I'm not that out of shape," he said.
Once Albright finally returns to the mat he will have
the task of trying to better last year's accomplishments,
which included a seventh place in the NCAA Champion
ships, a second place in the Big Eight Championships and
a 21-6-1 record.
"I thought I did fairly well last season, but I could have
done better," he said. "I was immature and kind of rushed
things. I wanted too much for myself."
"I'd like to go undefeated this year," Albright said.
As for the team in the future, Albright sees good things
happening.
"We're a young team. Next year we could beat Okla
homa if Bill and Jim (Scherr) don't redshirt, which is al
ways a possibility," he said. "Oklahoma State is tought.
They're one team I want to beat. When you look at a
wrestler from OSU they look like they're from Dodge
City ready to knock somebody off."
Albright, who is from Billings, Mont., said his decision
to come to Nebraska was a difficult one.
"1 was going to go to Oklahoma. I liked it there and
they have good coaches," he said. "But they also had Dr.
Death."
Albright was referring to Steve Williams, Oklahoma's
heavyweight wrestler who also is a starting lineman on
Oil's football team. Williams now wrestles professionally.
"If you go to Oklahoma and are a national champion,
you're just another national champion, but if you're a
national champion at Nebraska that's something."
"1 think the thing I regret about Nebraska is the fan
support," Albright said. "In Oklahoma, .fan support is
big. "It's getting better here, but 1 would like to see 1,000
people at the duals."
After his collegiate wrestling days are over, Albright
said, he has many possibilities.
"I'm thinking about going to the Marines and wrestl
ing on their team," he said. "They have good coaches and
treatment."
Joining the Marines would keep him in shape for the
possibility of making the United States Olympic team,
Albright said.
"I have a good chance of making three Olympic
teams," he said. "It'll be tough to make the freestyle team
in 1984, but I can't see anybody ahead of me in Greco
Roman. And then there's 1988."
Another possibility for Albright is professional wrestl
ing. "I think professional wrestling downgrades amateur
wrestling, but I've thought about it," he said. "I talked to
Doc (Williams) and asked him if it was fake. He said it was
real and if I thought it was fake I should step into the
ring, but I still think it's fake."

Wanted: A bowl game - anywhere
Hoped-for Wake Forest victory only a mirage
The Colleges
"That was the best 0-11 team I have seen by far,"
Houston Coach Bill Yeoman said of Rice Saturday. Un
fortunately, it was also the only 0-1 1 team he saw, so the
blinking Owls annexed their second Bottom 10 title in
five years.
Memphis State (1-10), is sort of reverse Arizona State,
blew everything in its final game with an untimely 12-0
win against Arkansas State. (Richmond, which finished
Steve Harvey
0-10, is ineligible for the rankings because of its nickname,
the Spiders.)
Among the also-stumblei, No. 15 Wake Torest wn
beaten 17-21 by Clcmson In the Mirage Bowl in Tokyo.
(Clemson still it eligible for bowl games as long as they are
not in the Western Hemisphere.)
The controversy about who has the wont team in the
Northwest continued amid rumors that twin losers Oregon
and Oregon State swapped uniforms before their game
Saturday.

For the Record: Hie judge who awarded boxer Randy

person who ruled that Southern California running back
Michael Harper crossed the goal line before fumbling in
the drive that defeated Notre Dame.
Attention ttat fans: Notre Dame and Alabama are each
within 31 losses of the NCAA Division I record for con

Geologists, sifting through fossilized shoulder pads and
carefully studying cave drawings inside the home team's
tunnel in Baltimore, believe that the last time the Dolts
scored was Sept. 19, 1982. Still, San Francisco (1-3) may
be remembered as the surprise dud of the year, especially
if it becomes the first defending Super Bowl champ to
capture The Bottom 10 title. Speculation has it that the
off-season banquet tour hurt the club, now known as the
Forty-Diners.
Elsewhere, the Rams finally won, but running back
humble Tyler coughed up the ball three times to give him
seven bobbles in four games. With the shortened schedule,
Fumble is obviously in a hurry to catch the single-season
record of 17, held (or dropped) by Dan PastorirU.
Denver rose to No. 4 without the services of quarter
back Craig Morton, who was benched until he can gain
more experience.
