Monday, November 29, 1982 Daily Nebraskan If you'd rather be cutting hair than classes . . . Page 12 By Peggy Polacek If career goals seem hazy in the future and four years before graduating with a degree seems too long, then the College of Hair Design might be the solution. The College of Hair Design, 304 S. 11th St., is unique in that few barber and beauty schools in the United States operate under the same roof, said Albert Howard, president and founder of the 21 -year-old school. The school offers course sequences in barbering and cos metology or a combination of the two. Most students complete cosmetology and barber courses in about 12 months, while the combination course requires about 18 months to finish, Howard said. About 90 percent of students choose the combinat ion course, while 5 percent opt for the other programs, Howard said. "Learning by experience" is emphasized in the cur riculum, which is based on the actual skills and pro cedures needed to operate as a hair designer, he said. Students learn through laboratory workshop and clinic work. The college's main objective is to teach courses that include all services required by customers in a salon, he said. Other courses prepare a student for success as a salon owner or manager, he said. During the first three months of school students learn the basics of hair design. During the next two quarters, students spend half their time in theory classes ano! the other half developing their technical skills. In the last quarter, basic and advanced skills are taught and students continue working on the clinic floor for their last months in school. Clinic work is done on the public who come to the college to get their hair done, he said. Prices, ranging between $3 and $3.50, are about 50 percent less than at a salon. There are 46 hair cutting stations at the col lege for students to assist customers. Classes begin every three months on the first Monday in January, April, July and October. Currently, about 75 students attend the college and the college has a capacity for about 90, he said. The cost for each student is about $3,000 a year. Students must place their names on a waiting list and generally wait about six months before starting classes. Students applying must have a high school dip loma and must go through a personal interview before being accepted. A placement service also is provided by the school. Most students get placed, although some may not stay there, he said. Sometimes students even are helped to find another job. Graduation from school does not equal a license to practice, he said. The graduate is eligible for examination by a state board and receives a license if they pass the appropriate tests. Classified 47. 24761 1 pair Size 8M. Janice. of Zodiac boots.
