Tuesday, November 23, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 5 Democrats fail . . . Continued from Page 4 Let theui not misread the returns. On election night, Virginia's Senate candidate, Republi can Paul Trible, described his win as "a victory of philosophy, of deep and abiding commitment to conserva tive principles of government." Republican Rep. Jack Kemp captured his blue-collar Buffalo, N.Y., district with an astounding 75 percent of the vote - having campaign ed for (a) more tax cuts and (b) accelerating the ones al ready adopted. Missouri's Republican Sen. John Danforth - recognizing almost too late that his state's voters might fall for anything (even his opponent) unless he himself stood for something - eked out victory by campaigning as a never-say-die Reaganite in the last days of his race. So the message is clear: Mr. Reagan and the Republi cans must use their moment, their opportunity. They must oppose any tax increases. They must stick with heftier defense outlays. They must dismiss the freeze on the mischief that it is. They must be unequivocal. For if they now perform the waffler's waltz, it will be their last dance before Tip and Teddy and their troops take over the White House in a palace coup of their own. (c) 182, Tribune Co. Syndicate, Inc. Ballot-box . . . Continued from Page 4 We have seen these rights conflict before in attempts by some to limit access to abortion and by others to legitimize raetrile. We have seen the dramas acted out in legislatures and regulatory agencies and courtrooms. Now, Berkeley has played it out at the ballot box in one broad brushstroke - an all-out ban. This time I think the people of Berkeley misplaced their mistrust. The victory is likely to be a short one. The APA and the Northern California Psychiatric Society announced this week that they will challenge the ban. The controversy will go on. we are, simply put, ambivalent toward science, medicine, technology. In need, we reach out for the quick fix, the newest pharmaceutical hope. In skepticism, we hold back for fear of being misled, zapped. This is not a problem that we can allay by adopting some new demo cratic bedside manner. We can't cure it with prescriptions by ballot box. These people are grossly misled. They are the very same people who seem to forget how loyally so many Americans have performed to protect the freedoms which our forefathers fought so courageously to gain. Through the efforts of many dedicated Americans, all of us, includ ing these draft resisters, are able to enjoy freedoms and benefits unequal anywhere. We do have a responsibility to our nation. This re sponsibility is small relative to the benefits we receive from living in America. Perhaps, the greatest responsibility America has is to protect our freedoms. This can only be achieved through the coatribution of her people. Ironical ly, those draft resisters seem to live by the motto "It is not what you can give to your nation, but what your nation can give to you." Our message to these people who wish not to contribute to the virtues which give us all freedom is simple: 'if you don't want to do your part, then go elsewhere." Mat Tfnley senior, finance MX missile for Mueller? Upon leaving class Friday morning I was assaulted by a tin-plated semblance of music ringing out from the Mueller Tower. "Why would anyone do this to me," I thought, as I cringed and hastily walked away. Confident that this barrage of clanging bells offends others as well as myself, I have formulated a plan of action. Trade in the tower for an MX missile, bells and all. If you'd like, I could call President Reagan myself to per sonally arrange the details, but 1 don't think there would be much red tape, as this is a fairly even trade. Imagine what the UNL-MX could do for us. Besides protecting our university from invading Soviet troops, it could rake in royalties from visitation by grade school field trips. At about 70 cents a shot (no pun intended), the up coming $50 tuition surcharge could be waived in a few years. In addition, the cone (warhead, if you prefer) could be used for cost-free housing for one or more regents, which would knock another 2QQ.,pr 300 bucks off our school costs. "What's in it for Uncle Sam?" you ask. The answer: an end to the Russian military threat. If we deployed the Mueller Tower on Moscow, the Kremlin would be crippled within 10 minutes, under the relentless torture of a tin coated "Nebraska Fight Song." The sooner we act, the better - for all of us. This past Friday I hoped the Daily Nebraskan would have an article concerning the Oklahoma and Oklahoma State duals, two teams that finished in the top four in nationals last year. But like usual, that's all I had, hopes. This is my second year at UNL and 1 think I've seen four or five articles at the most in the Daily Nebraskan about wrestling, and I read it daily. Every day there is an article on football. They even got publicity when they didn't have practice. It's not that I don't like football, but is it too much to ask for an article a week? The wrestling team has the potential of being good this year, but nobody knows about it. Last year the team finished sixth in the NCAA tournament. That was better than the football team did (ninth and 1 1 th in the two polls) and I didn't even see a Sport Short about it. I'm not saying the wrestlers will end up having a dynasty like the football team does today, but they should get what they deserve - a little media coverage. Right now (and for the next couple years), they have a good thing going. The DN may say surveys show people aren't interested in wrestling. How are people to become interested if they don't know the team exists or when the meets are? Yet people know we have a team that could finish high in the nationals. The football team didn't get started without publicity and 1 don't think the wrestling team can either. Alan Lawrence sophomore, pre-med wrestler Nuclear questions abound With all the recent nuclear freeze commotion, I think a few questions need to be answered. Is there a difference between the production of nuclear weapons and the production of nuclear power? Is there a difference between a nuclear attack and the careless disposal of nuclear waste? Is there a difference between pushing the wrong button in a military command post and pushing the wrong button in a nuclear power plant? And finally, don't you die the same horrible death no matter what you're exposure to nuclear radiation? If the nuclear freeze movement is opposed to the nuclear arms race because they foresee eminent doom, shouldn't they also be opposed to nuclear power for the same reason?
