Continued from Page 4 "I've tried to explain to them that Elza is 21; it's not against the law for her to leave home, and every lead we have indicates that she left because she wanted to. I'm afraid that the only way we may find her is if she eventually shows up deceased." Lt. William Mahon, commander of the missing per sons section of the Chicago Police Department, agreed with Bernet. "We do not believe that foul play was involved when she left home," he said. "We get 21,000 calls a year for missing persons. We clear most of them. But once in awhile you have a person who takes off and is never heard from again. I'm afraid that's what has happened here." Slowly, William and Else Habinyak are coming to realize that their daughter may never come home again. With great pain, they are even coming to realize that perhaps she left because she wanted to. That doesn't help. The facts, in their minds, remain the same. The daughter they had brought up from in fancy went to school one day with only the clothes on her back, and she never came home. "We cry every night," Habinyak said. "We have din ner, and we wait by the phone, and finally we pray together. Then my wife begins to cry, and I put my arm on her to comfort her, and I cry, too." Elza's mother doesn't want to believe the worst. At this point, though, she would be happy just to know that her daughter is alive. That would allow her to have some inner peace. "If someone who knew something would just let us know that she is all right," Mrs. Habinyak said. "That would be enough for me. Just to know that she is OK and taking care of herself, or that someone is taking care of her. When you've taken care of your daughter all her life, you want to know if she is all right." The statement addressed the reason for taking a business language course, but the idea is the same: Americans have more to gain from learning about what goes on in other countries than it may appear.
