Offensive line clears way
By Tad Stryker
Take it from Mike Rozier: running
behind an offensive line like Nebraska's
improves an I-back's frame of mind, not
to mention his statistics.
Rozier said the Huskers probably have
the best collegiate offensive front in
the nation.
"That's one of the reasons I came
here," the transfer from Coffeyville (Kan.)
Junior College said. "At other places,
you're more likely to get beat up."
Rozier has not gone through the season
unscathed - a hip pointer and a sprained
wrist have given him some trouble - but
he has emerged as a darkhorse Heisman
Trophy candidate while running behind
the line spearheaded by Outland Award
winner Dave Rimington.
The Husker center said that although
he has been getting national acclaim,
the rest of the offensive line has been

Teammates deserve credit
Guards Mike Mandelko and Dean
Steinkuhler and tackles Randy Theiss
and Jeff Kwapick have been doing their
jobs well, he said.
"I feel proud to be a part of this team,"
Rimington said.
Theiss has started with Rimington
since they were sophomores in 1980.
Mandelko also saw playing time as a
sophomore, and started last year. Kwapick
started part time last year, and Steinkuhler,
the only junior of the five, lettered as a
reserve.
Experience is the major factor in the
line's success, according to Rimington.
'it's our knowledge of the game,"
he said. "We have a pretty good idea of
what the other players are doing."
The line works well together, Riming
ton said.

for NU ball carriers
"We try and help one another out,"
he said. "If one guy breaks down, it
makes us all look bad."
The five have avoided looking bad
while clearing the way for Husker ball
carriers to average nearly 400 yards a
game, far more than second-place Okla
homa's average.
Strong line executes well
"We know what we're doing," Kwapick
said. "As far as executing goes, I'd say
we're one of the best."
Kwapick didn't put as much emphasis
on the thinking part of the game.
"We're pretty physical, too," he said.
"We're probably the strongest offensive
line we've had since I've been here."
Kwapick, a fifth-year senior, credited
the Husker weight training program for
the Huskers' strength advantage.
"It's gotten tougher and more involved
every year," he said.

credited cart of the Hus
kers' success to their depth. The second
string line - composed of center Brad
Johnson, tackle Scott Raridon and Mark
Traynowicz, and guards Kurt Glathar
and Harry Grimminger - has been playing
"real well," Rimington said.
"Anytime you get two lines that can
go, it helps a lot, especially in hot games,"
he said. "In the Iowa and Auburn games,
we just wore out the defense."
Coach Tom Osborne has noted that
this year's tight ends and wingbacks
are the best Husker blockers he's seen
at those positions since he's been coaching
at Nebraska.
The receivers' main contribution is
usually in downfield blocking, which,
according to Rozier, is better than ever
this season.
" "I'm not worrying about who's going to
block for me next year," he said. "There's
going to be somebody experienced there."
