Manter Hall Resource Center
Life science center opens
By Tammy Kaup
The Life Sciences Resource Center,
Manter Hall 118, opened Nov. 8 as a result
of a grant given to the College of Arts and
Sciences.
The Life Sciences School received
$60,000 to buy equipment for the room
as part of a grant from the National
Science Foundation, William Leonard,
School of Life Sciences faculty director
for the center, said.
Leonard said the room is an "alternative
to lecture." He described it as "a student
learning center devoted to individualized
instruction which utilized state-of-the-art
technology."
Instructional videotape and slide-cassette
programs are available for students
interested in various areas of biology,
including genetic engineering, photosyn
thesis, basic ecology, evolution and
zoology.
Media equipment available for student
use includes microcomputers, laser discs,
video players and monitors. An IBM
personal computer and two Apple II com
puters are available on a limited basis for
running computerized instructional
programs, for word processing and for
individual student programming use.
Some of the programs are learning
games of educational and current interest
such as "Osmosis" and "Three-Mile
Island." Leonard said the school is begin
ning to develop a library of software mater
ial to use on the computer or video players.
Students needing help in a specific area
can go to the room, which is staffed by
teaching assistants, select a program related
to the subject and view it at their own
pace. Faculty members also may assign
instructional programs to be viewed for
class work.
No appointment is necessary to use the
center, which is open from 11:30 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. Thursday for the remainder of the
semester.
Leonard said it is hoped that in the
future the room will be open more than
20 hours a week so that students can take
advantage of evening and weekend time
they may have free.
