Burke: Position is exciting, frustrating
By Bob Asmussen
It was early in the fourth period with Missouri leading
Nebraska, 10-9. The Huskers had lost quarterback Turner
Gill for the day and needed a big play. They got it.
Cornerback Dave Burke intercepted a Brad Perry pass
at the Nebraska 33-yard line and set out for the goal
line.
"The interception was pretty exciting right when I
caught the ball," Burke said.
After returning the ball 21 yards, Burke's excitement
turned to frustration. He was blind-sided and fumbled
the ball. Missouri recovered at their own 46-yard line
and ultimately got a field goal out of the drive.
"I should have run to the sideline," he said. "I was
trying to get the ball as far as I could. I was really frust
rated but there was nothing I could do about it."
Burke said the play bothered him for a while, but
when he came off the field, Coach John Melton told him
not to worry about it.
"I couldn't ever blame it on myself because you
can't win by yourself or lose by yourself," Burke said.
Before last spring, Burke never would have been in
the position to make the interception in the first place.
Burke, who redshirted last season, was moved in the
spring from I-back to cornerback. He said he first heard
about a possible change of position the Friday before
the beginning of spring practice.
"There was a note on my locker to see Coach lorn
Osborne or Coach Mike Corgan," Burke said. "On the
way to see them I saw Coach Bill Thornton. They told
My boss dldnt under
stand that I was healthy
attain.
So I was let go.
A lot of people are like
my boss. They think that
everyone dies of cancqr. I
thought so, too. Until the
American Cancer Society,
through one of its service
and rehabilitation programs
helped me return to a
normal life.
The ACS also has local
Units that help Americans
who've never had cancer
understand it better.
Today,' more and more,
cancer is a curable disease.
Ignorance about cancer is
curable, too.

me they wanted me to switch to corner."
"It was up to me too if I wanted to switch," he said.
"They ask you if you want to switch. Nine times out
of ten, it's to your advantage to switch."
Burke has moved from second-team status to a share
of the first team with Neil Harris. He said he's getting
a good feel for the position and he is happy he made
the move.
"At first I was really uncomfortable," he said. "I
wasn't used to backpedalling. Learning the coverage
is just a matter of concentration and repetition."
Burke said he hasn't let the criticism of NU's defens
ive backfield bother him because most people don't
realize what the defense is trying to do.
"A lot of times we're playing back and people
throw underneath the coverage," Burke said. "People
have been able to move the ball on us but they haven't
put it in the end zone much."
Burke, a sophomore, said he expects to start as a
junior and a senior.
"I'm going to stick around this summer and work
hard," he said. "I'll work out with some of the other
players and we'll push each other."
If Burke was going to go home this summer he would
be going to Layton, Utah, a city of 20,000 just outside
of Ogden. He said people in Utah don't have the same
football spirit people have in Nebraska for the Big Red.
"People back home were a little concerned about me
coming back here and getting lost in the shuffle," he
said. "I figured if I wasn't good enough to play here
they wouldn't have recruited me."
