Tuesday, October 26, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 11 Coach says wrestlers could topple major rivals By Kevin warneke With the 1982-83 wrestling season just around the corner, UNL Coach Bob Fehrs is optimistic and believes Nebraska is in a position to knock off one of the big three - Iowa State, Oklahoma and Okla homa State - in conference competition. "On paper we would have to feel that we can do much better, but at this point we haven't been under the gun and proven that we can do well,' Fehrs said. "We feel we can pressure the perennial big three and maybe move into the top three. It's a possibility. With 23 duals scheduled for the team, Fehrs said that a record of 21-2 or 20-3 would be what they are shooting for. "Anything below that would be disa ppointing," he said. "We want. to peak at the Big Eight Championships and nationals," Fehrs said. "There's potential fojr us to be in the top five." One reason why the squad has the potential for achieving big things this season is that only two wrestlers - John nie and Billy Selmon - were lost to gradua tion. Another strengthening factor on the team is the new recruits, according to Fehrs. "We brought in some good recruits in several weight classes in which we needed help," he said. "Maybe not in the capacity of starters, but these new- people will provide us with substitutes to back up the starters." Matt Campbell and Allen Frances, two high school state champions, were added at the 118 weight class, while Bill Ferrie and John Dettart were recruited to bolster the 142 weight class. The Hus kers will also have another pair of brothers on the squad in Jake and Scott Sabo at the 158 and 190 weight classes, respect ively. Fehrs also pointed out that he thinks the lighter weight classes will be stronger this year for his squad. "Last year we started matches out behind the eight ball," he said. "This year the first three weight classes will' be competitive." John Shearer, along with the two freshmen recruits, will be battling for the 118 pound weight classes. Shearer is coming off an injury. The 126 weight class sees a much im proved Al Goldman in the driver's seat, according to Fehrs. Lance Milsap and Chris Marisette will be battling for the 134 weight class spot. Both are sophomores and both wrestled at that weight last year. Al Freeman, returning from a redshirt year, is scheduled to wrestle at both 142 and 150, with Dave Evans also at 142 and Dave Goldman at 150. The 158 weight class will see a struggle between Judd' Norman and Rory Cahoj for the top spot, Norman is coming back from an arm injury. "We have strong hopes that whoever comes out on top will be competitive," Fehrs said. According to Fehrs, Ray Oliver is tabbed to wrestle in the 167 weight class and with a year of experience under his belt big things are expected of him. The next three weight classes are what Fehrs calk the strength of the team, since they will be filled by three returning ail-Americans in Jim and Bill Scherr and Gary Albright in the 177, Wand heavy weight weight classes. ? "They did extremely well last year and they're going to be back," Fehrs said. 'They're fairly secure in their spots but the biggest asset to the team will be in case of injuries, their backups will be much stronger." itfied 47 21761 CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 473-17(1 $ 2 .5 0 minimum charge per day on commercial ads.
