Fund A fees, which are for student organizations, account for $4.94 of the total $80 student fees paid by each student every semester. ASUN receives $1.26 per student per semester; Nebraska State Student Association, 50 cents; Daily Nebraskan, 90 cents, and the University Program Council, $2.28. Fund B student fees amount to $75.06 and are for institutional obligations and student services agencies, such as the University Health Center, Nebraska unions and recreation facilities. The NU Board of Regents adopted the refund policy for Fund A student fees on May 17, 1980. Students receiving Fund A refunds are not eligible for ASUN free legal services, a student discount on classified ads in the Daily Nebraskan and free classes, speakers, films or other programs sponsored by the University Program Council. They also are not eligible for studentrpriced tickets for Foreign and American classic films, concerts, dances, trips or contests sponsored by UPC, said Sara Boatman, of the Campus and Activities Program Office. Metzger said the appliction period for refunding was from Aug. 23 to Sept. 24, and the refunding period was from Sept.- 27 to Oct. 8. Refund information was placed on the instruction sheet for tuition payment, and two ads were placed in the Daily Nebraskan to inform students of the refund oppor- 1 D i i i I 1 I 1 tunity, Metzger said. 650 apply He said that 650 students picked up application forms, but only 384 completed and returned them. Of these, 50 students did not pick up the refund check. Metzger said the unclaimed money goes to the organiza tions it was collected for, as if the refund had not been requested. In previous years, the number of students requesting refunds was not as large, Metzger said. He said this year more students probably were aware of the service. In 1980-81, the first year of the refund policy, about $670 was returned to 220 students in the first semester. In 1981, $972.82, about half of the year's total, returned to 228 students in the first semester, Metzger said. ASUN President Dan Wedekind said that general questionnaires were put out with the refund applications. Questions such as the student's sex, class, living unit, college and reason for getting a refund were asked, he said. Wedekind said the results were geing tabulated and would be competed the middle of November. "Many of the people getting refunds didn't realize that they would no longer be eligible for some of the services," Wedekind said. "We included the questionnaire . to see whether or not we are reaching the largest amount of students in the best way possible." Students need every penny Boatman said the UPC executive board believed that students request a refund because they need io get every penny possible. Although the amount of the refund is pretty small, it may make a difference to some students, sne saia. Other students may believe they don't use the services Boatman said. In previous years, she said she knew of stu dents who lost money on the refunds because they had to pay regular price for tickets to a UPC speech or play. Metzger said identification cards of students who received refunds were marked to indicate thir ineligibili ty for some services. However, Metzger said there are services which are impossible to entorce, sucn as tne uauy Mebrskan. Forde, a professor of history at UNL and vice president of the Com mittee to Oppose Special Rights for Homo sexuals, held a press conference Friday afternoon to denounce gubernatorial candi date Bob Kerrey's stance on gay rights. As a member of the Lincoln Commis sion on Human Rights, Kerrey voted in favor of a resolution to the City Council re commending that the city ordinance pro hibiting discrimination because of race or religion be extended to gays as well. Forde said he thinks Kerrey's views on the issue are "extremely important, I was hoping it would become a campaign issue. I realized a month ago it wasn't going to be come an issue. So I talked with some former members of the committee and decided to take this action." Forde said the Committee to Oppose Special Rights for Homosexuals formed last spring to fight the Gay Rights Ordinance on the May ballot but has since disbanded. The press conference was not an official action of the committee, nor was it an action to endorse Gov. Charles Thone, he said. "I'm just trying to get Kerrey to fish or cut bait," Forde said. "I would like to see him (Kerrey) disavow his previous stance in support of homosexual rights." in If l'm - - 1 m 1 m TWO J lA)Lb 3 n luwcheow special mm mmm 02.90 value!
