Good serves
help Huskers
beat Sooners
By Ward Triplett
It took the Oklahoma
volleyball team seven hours
to get to Lincoln for Sa
turday's Big Eight confe
rence match at the UNL
Coliseum. It took Nebraska
less than 50 minutes to dis
patch the Sooners in
straight sets.
Nebraska's 15-5, 15-6,
15-6 victory gave the Hus
kers their fifth Big Eight
win in six tries.
"I think we kind of
unnerved them with our
serving," Husker Coach
Terry Pettit said. The win
unofficially gave Pettit his
200th coaching victory.
"We haven't played any
one for two weeks, and I
think they were anxious to
get out there," he said.
"Oklahoma didn't get set
up too well, while we
were playing real well. When
we play well like that,
we can play with anybody."
The 13th-ranked Huskers
improved their overall re
cord to 19-4. .
Oklahoma Coach Miles
Pabst agreed that Nebraska's
accurate serving doomed his
Sooners.
"Nebraska served extre
mely well, and we couldn't
pass at all," Pabst said.
Pabst said the Sooners'
inability to pass and put
pressure on Nebraska's de
fense made the difference
between this match and the
first Nebraska-Oklahoma
match, a four-set Nebraska
win.
"We were probably a
little tired from last night,
but Nebraska was very sharp
today," Pabst said. The
Sooners, now 2-5 in the
conference and 8-12 overall,
lost in five sets to Kansas
State Friday night.
"Nebraska also had that
two-week rest, which has
to be real nice," Pabst
added.
Pettit said he had hoped
the Sooners would give
Nebraska t better match
so he could give other
team members more playing
time.
"I had wanted to give
Debbie Thompsen and Sal
lye Ramsey more playing
time," Pettit said.
