In order to boost sales to the college-age market, Chrysler has created the 1983 Pentastar Challenge. The challenge involves the story of a fallen star named Ere Twas and two young children who try to return him to his proper place in the sky, according to a Chrysler press release concerning the program. The story evolves in the illustrations and accompanying text of a 1983 calendar, sold exclusively in college book stores. The clues and answers to five different riddles are sprinkled throughout the pages of the calendar in a subtle manner. Chrysler is offering five $5,000 scholarships to people who can decipher the riddles and send the appropriate responses in five separate disciplines: math, music, liter ature, chemistry and computer science. Other prizes offered In addition to the individual scholarships in each category, the winners also will receive a gold Pentastar medal (the Pentastar is Chrysler's trademark), and one year's use of a new Dodge Charger or Plymouth Turismo. One hundred second-place winners, 20 from each cate gory, will be awarded a silver Pentastar medallion. According to the press release, Chrysler commissioned author John Magel to write the adventures of Ere-Twas and the children, Joanne and Janus, in a storybook fashion. The clues to the five different puzzles appear both in the text and in the illustrations of the challenge. According to Craig Holland, production coordinator of print media for the program, the purpose of the chal lenge is "to let the college generation know that we're alive and well, and we are willing to help them get an education." Chrysler views this contest as a long-range publicity campaign, he said in a phone interview. The challenge will cost Chrysler about $500,000, corporation officials estimate. Most of the cost will be for public relations handouts sent to the thousands of college bookstores across the country that are stocking the calendars. Sales increasing As of last week, 12,000 calendars had been sold nationwide, and sales were increasing, Holland said. "All the big car manufacturers are very concerned about the youth market," he said. He added that judging from the success of this year's model, the contest will continue in future years. Although the exact nature of the questions and ans wers contained in the calendar is uncertain, Chrysler officials say they are hoping the challenge will at least attract large numbers of the college-age sector to their showrooms. To further this end, the calendar shows a different car for each month and also marks chairman Lee Iacocca's birthday. Chrysler officials also maintain that Ere-Twas bears no intended likeness to the E.T. of cinema fame. In fact, one Chrysler official said, Ere-Twas is an anagram for "Wee Star", which is perhaps another clue in the Pentastar Challenge. The calendars are available in Lincoln at the Nebras ka Bookstore for $4.98. If In 1980, UNL applied (j for a federal grant to con- J duct an energy audit on the union and Harper- Schramm-Smith Residence f halls to determine energy efficiency. As a result of ff the audit, conducted by a private Omaha firm, the union was found to be energy inefficient in four main areas. Window modifications on the north and south sides of the union were necessary along with kit chen hood modifications and roof insulation in the older section, Swanson said. Several university buildings were being con sidered for the audit but only the union and liar-per-Schramm-Smith were eligible for a federal grant to make improvements, he said. The union received a $141,574 federal grant in July of 1981 which was to be matched by the university with funding from student fees, Swanson said. Harper Schramm Smith received a grant of $37,385. The windows along the north side of the union didn't involve the replace ment of glass, just an addition of another layer of glass or of insulation between the existing pane and a new wall, he said. Replacement of the win dows on the south side is taking place because the wooden frames are old and deteriorating so that a replacement is necessaary, Swanson said.
