Plan to buy building put on hold
Ray Coffey, UNL business manager,
said there are several factors involved hi
the university's hesitation to make an
offer to buy the Whittier School build
ing. He said, however, that the univer
sity, is still considering the purchase of
the building at 2200 Vine St., although
there have been no further develop
ments. The former junior high school build-
ing, most recently used as offices by
Southeast Community College, is being
sold by the Lincoln Public Schools.
Coffey said the condition of the
building is a major factor.
Because it has been vacant since
1979, he said, the cost of putting it into
livable condition, repairing some "rugged-looking"
inside areas, and installing
heat and electricity would be tremendous.

Choosing a major is an often confusing
and sometimes dismaying oraeai iui
students. But like other objects of anxiety,
the more information that is known about
it, the less formidable it becomes.
The UNL Counseling Center, located
in Seaton Hall 1319, is in the business
of helping university students discover
information, about either their major or
themselves.
Understanding a student's situation is
one of the most important factors in
giving helpful insight into making career
choices, said Vernon Williams, director
of the center.
When students first come in for career
counseling, advisors will get acquainted
with them so that the counsejors can help
the students pinpoint their particular
interests, Williams said.
Having identified what the students
enjoy, counselors at the center will assist
them in finding concrete information
about careers that involve their interests
This, is often done by referring them to
uic v&mvi a vAtvuuik wai&ti uorary
which lists occupations and factors re
lated to them such as the current job
market, necessary qualifications for a
job, job descriptions, working conditions
in a field and salaries. Occasionally, stu
dents are given the name of a professional
in their field of interest to contact for
further information, Williams said.
The Counseling Center also offers a
career course through the educational
psychology department in the Teachers
College. .
The purpose of this course, according
to a circular describing it, " . . . is to
assist students in seeing the interrelated
ness of their self-concept, of how they
make decisions and specifically of all the
factors involved in making their career
decision." .
For career counseling or further infor
mation concerning the career course,
students should contact Williams at the
Counseling Center, 472-3461 .
