"These companies are able to reap incredible profits by super-exploitation of the people and resources," she said. "We will be asked to give more and more blood for the wealthy few in this country." Holder pointed out that rebels are on the offensive in El Salvador despite the more than $80 million the United States has given the country's government in the last year. News documentation of U.S. advisers participating in combat missions against Salvadoran guerrillas exists, she said. "The parallels with VietNam are frightening." However, the Salvadoran government's alleged systema tic slaughter - "murders and disappearances are on the increase" - has not succeeded in quelling the guerrilla movement, she said. "The guerrilla success would not have been possible without the people's support (in food and other forms)," she said. The economic situation in El Salvador is desperate. Seventy-five percent of Salvadoran children under 5 are malnourished, and the country has a 50 percent in fant mortality rate, Holder said. Also, the land reform program has been thwarted and the number of landless peasants increases daily. The United States government continued its opposition to the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, which over threw dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979. Holder said the United States has spent $19 million for covert actions against the Sandinistas. "Aid was cut off to the Sandinista government while money was sent to reactionary business groups and AFL CIO affiliated trade unions," she said.
