Delegates . . .

NOW hasn't exactly retreated from
this position, but its refusal to make a
stronger show of support for lesbian con
cerns does little to bolster its credibility
in the eyes of the more radical sector
of the lesbian groups.
The delegates did, however, propose
resolutions concerning education, com
munications and legislation regarding les
bian issues. A videotape series on alter
nate lifestyles and a national conference
on lesbian issues are among its plans.
"I'll believe it when I see it," was the
reaction of one woman I talked to, a
lesbian and former member of NOW
who wished to remain anonymous. "Re
solutions are nice, but they're not the
same as action. We're at the bottom of
the pile as far as priorities are concernech"
But another woman, also a lesbian
and former Lincoln NOW member, had
a different view: "NOW has made more
visible efforts in this area than any other
group. Ten years ago we couldn't even
talk about lesbian concerns. Now, at
least, we have some recognition."
Lesbians are still something of an
embarrassment to the women's move
ment. Perhaps it is time for powerful
groups like NOW to change that "step
sister" image.
