DOUGLAS An tqual opportunity tmpioytf V US Cttirensnip rcqulrtd w' Monday, October 18, 1982 Optimism prevails at Governor's Bay By Eric Peterson The official occasion was Frank Morrison's induction into the Nebraska Democratic Hall of Fame, but the Democrats at the Governors' Day dinner Friday at the NBC Center were anticipating the election of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bob Kerrey. About 500 people attended the banquet, which cost $50 a plate, said DiAnna Schimek, Democratic state chairperson. Speakers recalled Democratic governors and placed Kerry among them. Darleene Brooks, the widow of former Democratic governor Ralph Brooks of McCook, and Morrison, a three-term governor, both stressed Kerrey's qualifications for office. "Bob Kerrey has increased his payroll in the last year by 300, when most of the Reagan supporters were dis charging their employees," Morrison said. Kerrey owns the Grandmother's Skillet and Lounge in Lincoln and Omaha. U.S. Sen. J. J. Exon gave voice to the group's general feeling that Kerrey is on the upswing. "I have the good news to report. . .that Charlie Thone received news from his own pollsters that he is behind in the 3rd District," Exon said. The 3rd Dictrict is tradition ally Nebraska's most Republican area. The state's financial crisis makes a change of admini stration essential, Exon said. "If we ever needed a return to a competent, business like administration, it's right now with the mess we're in," he said. Kerrey's comments echoes the optimistic tone of the evening. "The months ago, many said it was an unlikely and naive attempt," he said. He noted that his candidacy and Thone 's mistakes have changed the situations completely. Kerrey criticized the rigid, anti-welfare philosophy at work in the state and nation. He said that he had needed educational and income assistance after his return from VietNam. "I want you to know that it didn't make me lazy It in fact has made me very grateful," he said. Kerrey said his candidacy is in part a determination to do something about the stagnant state of Nebraska's government. "You cannot count on right on its own conquering evil," he said.
