Union Board. . .
Continued from Page 1
In open discussion, most board members said the
attendance for soap opera viewing in the lounge was too
great to merit the change. Crapson said the room would
be reserved from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
In the other new business, the majority of the board
expressed concern over waiving the rental room fee for a
student conference in February sponsored by the Afrikan
Peoples Union.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Richard Armstrong
requested a letter to Union Director Daryl Swanson said
that the board consider waiving room rental fees for the
1983 Big Eight Conference on Black Student Government.
Teach-In' . . .
"This is an important event for the black community
of this campus," Swanson said. "They (A.P.U. and other
black student body members) have been to conferences
on seven other Big Eight campuses. They extended the
invitation, and black students from the other Big Eight
schools will be here. I feel that it is important for us to
show our support for this conference and the black
community of Lincoln."
Meyer said the board would need information on the
number of rooms the organization wants, the number of
students expected, the projected cost of the rooms and
further information about the conference itself before
making a decision.
While it was not determined what the cost of the rooms
would be, Swanson said it would likely exceed the $154
budgeted by the A.P.U.
Meyer said the request was similar in some ways to
other requests to reduce room rental fees, and the board
should not be selective in determining who gets lower
rates and who doesn't.
"We just got through telling one group they couldn't
have reduced rates," Meyer said. "I don't think it would
be fair to turn around and grant them to another one."
Swanson said Armstrong's request differs from the one
recently presented to the board.

Erlich, associate professor of English at
UNL, who spoke on the history of
Zionism.
"A nostalgia for Zion, for Palestine,
never resulted in an activist or political
movement for return," he said. In fact,
treatise in the Talmud, a Jewish holy book
clearly states that the exiled Jews will
return to Palestine only at the time of the
coming of the Messiah.
"A tragedy has overtaken my people -the
Jews - that tragedy is Zionism."
Once a massacred people, "now it seems
we are among the people who perpetrate
massacre," Erlich said.
Zionism has become a major disaster
of the 20th century that erodes Jewish
morals and betrays what they have stood
for. Zionism was a response to the major
problem of what it means to be Jewish
in a modern world, Erlich said. This
called for "normalization," a people's
need for one language and a national
territory.
In quest for this, one Zionist ten
dency - to stress the power of will among

a mass of people to win by force - be
came a dominant tendency and is now a
major cause of catastrophe in Israel today,
he said.
"The common fact that we both want
our people to survive should serve as some
kind of foundation for two resourceful
personalities to meet without Zionism
standing between them as a barrier,"
he said.
David Forsythe, professor of political
science at UNL, spoke on the current
status of the PLO.
The Palestinians are no longer just
refugees, but a people with rights io a
homeland, he said. The PLO has made
diplomatic and political gains even if
they have lost their military power and
base in Lebanon. They also have gained
the sympathy of the American adminis
tration which is actively working for
some version of Palestinian rights.
"The Palestinian political movement
is alive and well after Lebanon," he said,
but "decision time is at hand for the
PLO."
