Silence isn 't golden for trio
"... But in the grand
scheme of things, does it
really matter?" asked
Dave, warming his hands
on a Big Mac.
His two glum com
panions stared at the Ro
nald McDonald poster on
the wall. Five minutes
passed.
"Yes," said Sally, the
female of. the group.
"We've got to talk."
"That's what we're here
for, isn't it?" Bob, the
I
shy one, said hesitantly.
"I suppose so," said
Dave.
The three gazed at the
ceiling. A surly employee
began clearing their table
and giving them ominous
looks.
"Gosh, I'm hungrier
than I thought," Sally
remarked. "I'm going to
get another Quarter
Pounder."
"Can I go with you?"
Dave and Bob asked simul
taneously. "I guess I'll stay here,"
said Dave, glaring at Bob.
"We should have gone
to Wendy's. I miss the
full-bodied flavor that ex
tra 20 percent more meat
adds to the burgers," Sally
said.
"That's Burger King
you're thinking of, you
ignorant slob!" Bob said.
Sally cast a vile look in
his direction.
"That's the kind of
stuff we're supposed to
be talking about," she
said.
The two collected their
second courses of fast
food and returned to the
table. Dave drummed his
fingers impatiently on the
windowsill.

fingers impatiently on the
windowsill, Dave," Sally
said. "We're here to talk."
For 15 minutes, silent
chewing prevailed.
Bob excused himself
and was gone for about
half an hour. When he
returned, looking slightly
green, Sally and Dave were
engrossed in a crossword
puzzle and sipping cold
coffee.
"Where were you?"

Dave asked. "Help me find
a four-letter word for
"procrastinate."
"Bull," Sally muttered,
a pencil clenched between
her teeth.
"I don't think that's
exactly what we need,"
Dave said.
Sally laid down her
paper in exasperation.
"We've been here an
hour and a half already.
Now, are we going to

the group sat back and
eyeballed each other threa

Sally wondered aloud.

Bob. "As a matter of
fact, the one I've got
on is almost like it."
"Gee, mine, too!" said
Sally.
They compared shades
of polyester. The last
customers began filing out
of the restaurant as the
lights slowly dimmed.
"It's almost 11," Dave
said.
The group, of one ac
cord, stared at the lumi
nous clock above the door.
The second hand moved.
Presently, the minute hand
did too.
"We've got to talk,"
Bob said. "Shall we move
on to O'Rourke's?"
