Friday, October 15, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 1 1 Big Red to fight off upset-minded Kansas State As I said in my World Series column MnnHav th Brewers don't have a pitching staff except for Don Sut ton and Pete Vukovich and, I meant to say, Mike Cald well. Sorry for that oversight, Mike. And don't forget to bring your radios to the game Saturday so you can listen to the Series. And now to the business at hand. Kansas State at Nebraska. This is not your typical Kansas State team. Any team with 28 returning starters has to be good, unless you're the Baltimore Colts. The Wildcats haven't really beaten anyone noteworthy, but the team they lost to - Arizona State - is pretty Jeff Goodwin good. And sometimes you can improve more by losing to a good team than by beating a lame team. Nebraska learned last week that everybody is going to be out to get them this season. They also learned that there are going to be a lot of footballs in the air from now until November. The Huskers fight off an upset-minded Wildcat team: Nebraska 35, Kansas State 17. Southern California at Stanford. Stanford has John Elway, this year's Heisman Trophy winner. The Trojans have their usual tough defense. It's hard to see how even the USC defense can stop Elway. The question is: Can they stop him enough to allow USC's offense to control the ball for a while? Stanford is a freaky team this year. They beat Ohio State in the last two minutes and they lost to Arizona State in the last 30 seconds. USC makes a habit of win ning games in the last minute and they do it again: USC 27, Stanford 24. Oklahoma at Kansas. For some reason the Sooners always seem to have trouble with Kansas. Before the season this figured to be a tough game for Oklahoma but now it's anyone's guess. The Jayhawks have been the biggest disappointment in the Big Eight this year. A win over the Sooners could go a long way toward easing that disappointment, and possibly put Kansas back in the Big Eight title hunt. There is no good reason forthis but: Kansas 21, Okla homa 20. Ohio State at Illinois. The Buckeyes have lost three games in a row. The last time that happened, Rutherford B. Hayes was president. Even more unusual, the Illini are favored to beat Ohio State. The last time Illinois was favored to beat Ohio State, Lincoln was president. Buckeye coach Earle Bruce has to be glad to get out of Columbus, this week. (But then who wouldn't be glad . Intramurals Kathy Seybold scored two touchdowns and Ricky Ruffins ran back an inter ception for a score to lead the Quarters to a 21-20 overtime win against VUFANGU for the co recreational intramural foot ball championship. Ruffins broke up a VUFANGU pass at the goal line on the last play of regulation and swatted away another pass at mid field on the last play of the overtime to preserve the victory. VUFANGU's Linda Jan sen scored on touchdown runs of 1. and 12 yards and jan in a two-point conversion. VUFANGU's other touchdown came on a pass from Robin Sheer to Ron Blase. The Quarters ended the overtime period with the ball on the VUFANGU yard line and were awarded one penetration point to break the tie. Other members of the winning team are: Mike Schmidt, Paul Strong, John Russell, Dale Somer, Kelly McCann, Mary Wilna, Cheryl Jeanneret, -Sally Keuhl and Mary Weitner. Sara. Lock wood, Gators, defeated Christa Kamprath, Sandoz 9, 12-8 in the women's tennis singles championship. Peggy Hupp, Kappa Al pha Theta, won the wo men's horseshoe singles with a 21-8 win against Christa Kamprath of Sandoz 9. Softball gloves that were lost during men's games this season can be claimed at the Recreation Office, 1740 Vine St. Men's, women's and co recreational table tennis doubles entries are due Tuesday. Entries for co recreational basketball, men's volleyball, women's innertube water basketball and men's and women's 8-ball pool are due Oct. 26. Further information on UNL intramural activities can be obtained by calling the Recreation Office at 472-3467. to get out of Columbus?) The Buckeyes get back on the winning track: Ohio State 28, Illinois 21. Purdue at Northwestern. I don't usually write about Northwestern, but the Wildcats won a game last week -against a Division I school. They've now won two games in the last three weeks. Can the Rose Bowl be far away? Yes. Purdue has lost their last eight games in a row and they really are lousy. Nevertheless, the still should win this game: Purdue 31, Northwestern 14. Other Games East: Penn State 28, Syracuse 7; Boston College 34, Rutgers 14; Clemson 31, Duke 21; North Carolina 35, North Carolina State 20; West Virginia 27, Virginia Tech 14; Army 21 , Princeton 7. Midwest: Michigan 28, Iowa 23; Minnesota 34, In- Few Husker frosh sit out This year's NCAA rule that allows freshmen to redshirt is not having much effect on the Nebraska football program this season, according ot Coach Tom Osborne. Only two Husker freshmen are sitting out this season: Stan Parker, a tight end from Bellevue, and Brad Tyrer, a defensive end from Kansas City, Mo. Both will receive hardship rulings from the NCAA because of injuries, UNL Assistant Sports Informa tion Director Chuck Pool said. Parker injured his knee in this summer's Shrine Bowl game in Lincoln. Tyrer separated a shoulder in an early fall practice. None of the other freshmen - about 90 or 95 in all - chose to redshirt this season after Osborne offered them the choice earlier this fall. Osborne said he wasn't really surprised because the freshmen had been practicing together for five weeks when they made the decision. The prospect of giving up junior varsity games in favor of joining the scout team was not too inviting, he said. In 1978, the NCAA allowed freshmen to red shirt. Several of this year's Husker seniors, includ ing Steve Damkroger, Todd Brown, Jamie Williams and Steve McWhirter, sat out their freshman year. The NCAA overturned the rule until this year.
