Prayer is personal
Crowd entertained
Cynthia Grandberry's letter (Daily Nebraskan, Oct. 8)
questioned whether I contradicted myself during a talk
at UNL, reported in the Daily Nebraskan Sept. 30. Hie
"contradictory" statement attributed to me in the article
declared, "prayer in schools is a good thing."
Correction is required. My tape reveals that in respond
ing to a question about prayer in school, I pointed out the
very personal nature of prayer and said that neither the
state nor any of its instrumentalities should be writing
prayers. Prayer should be between a person and his or
her God. The state should not compel any child to be
subjected to prayer. My unambiguous conclusion was,
"There should not be any prayer in school - or in the
Legislature."
I hold to this view with the consistency of the Earth's
movement around the sun.

I would like to respond to the Oct. 6 editorial la
beling students as "dumb" for listening to Sister Pat
and her two cohorts.
It's not often one gets to hear three talented come
dians peddle their wares in public for free. It was great
entertainment and well worth attending for anyone
who enjoys a good laugh.
1 really am not sure if any of the three were actually
serious about what they were saying.
The only one who appeared firm in his convictions
and refrained from theatrics was the man in the suit
whose name I can't remember. The crowd wasn't dumb;
they flocked to hear Sister Cindy because she was the
funniest of the three by far.
The only people 1 consider a little off-base were
those who actually seriously debated Sister Cindy. They
were actually lending credence to her drivel and were
offended by it.
Heck, when Steve Martin says something funny, I

don't argue with him, I laugh. That's what most of the
crowd came to do when they saw this religious freak

Criticize only if you care
Julia O'Gara wrote "the God of Christianity is decided
ly male." That quote and others in her article (Daily
Nebraskan, Oct. 11) give the impression that she shuns
the established Western religions.
If this is true, why does she write about sex discrimi
nation in these institutions? Only people who deeply
care about their beliefs should voice displeasure at the
practices of their religious institutions.
But people who despise these religions and dislike
their place in our society should not try to advocate a
cause in something they would like to see destroyed.

Goodman 's facts doubted
I wish I were familiar with "every poll" mentioned
in Ellen Goodman's Oct. 8 column.
It is a fairly bold move to state that two-thirds of the
American public is against banning abortions. A more
realistic assertion would be that a large majority of people
are non-committed on the abortion issue and others may
approve of abortion only in certain cases (like rape or
incest). This is still different from the pro-abortionists'
goal of abortion on demand. In any case, Goodman's
figure is not reflective of public opinion polls I have
seen.
One of the most amazing characteristics of pro-abortionists
is their ability to fool themselves as they attempt
to put one over on the American public. The most notable
evidence of this self-brainwashing is their need to deper
sonalize the fetus by referring to it as a "blob of tissue,"
a "product of conception" or "contents of the uterus."
They may be convinced in their minds, but their
consciences are telling them different.
The failure of the U.S. Senate to pass any pro-life
legislation this session will only serve as an impetus for pro
lifers to get the facts out to the public and clear the air
of pro-abortionists' misinformation. Until then, the
carnage will continue.
