Prejudices offend Yalie
To poke fun at the preppies is one thing, but to say
that all those who did not go to Harvard or Yale "des
pise those who did (as Bob Greene said in his Oct. 7
column) is another.
The statements "We hate them. We don't want them
around" are not only a sign of childishness, prejudice
and rudeness but also show the inability to love and
accept.
I'm a Yalie and proud of it. I'm also on the faculty
of the UNL College of Nursing and I'm proud of that,
too. Greene needs to apologize to all those who went
to Harvard or Yale. Perhaps we can help him to move
beyond his narrowness and inability to accept those not
like him.

Coverage is hypocritical
In the Oct. 6 editorial titled "Evangelists and heck
lers without class," the Daily Nebraskan attacks two
evangelists because they use shocking statements and
fanaticism to draw crowds. The editorial then says the
crowd is "dumb" to give them that attention.
Why then, did the paper devote a front page picture
and an entire column of the editorial page to those evan
gelists they had criticized for using unacceptable means
of attracting attention? It seems to me that the paper
is just reinforcing the evangelists' belief in their methods.
Furthermore, I feel the Daily Nebraskan has a ten
dency to dwell on the negative, especially about Christian
ity. When a class performer like illusionist Andre Kohl
visits the UNL campus, draws 600 people and presents
the gospel in a socially acceptable manner, not one word
is written about it in the Daily Nebraskan. Cindy Las-
Promises . . .
Continued from Page 4
once again by restating this promise while planning to -raise
the Nebraska sales tax rate in January of 1983.
When state revenue collection figures were released
Oct. 7 by the state Department of Revenue, Thone held
a press conference to institute new "economy measures"
in an attempt to lessen the grim effects of the critically
low revenue returns.
The combination of Thone's "economy measures"
and the expected call of a special session of the Legis
lature to slash approximately $20 million from the
1982-83 budget has resulted in a Thone projection that
state books will be in balance by June 30, 1983, the end
of the current fiscal year. Thone's deception surfaces
in his utilization of a 3.5 percent sales tax rate which he
applies throughout the remainder of fiscal year 82-83.
Was it not Thone who authorized the resumption of
a 3 percent rate for January 1983? If, in fact, Thone
intends to reinstate a 3.5 percent sales tax rate for the
second half of fiscal year 82-83 in his attempt to balance
the state budget is he not again raising state taxes?
Candidate Gov. Thone has yet to conceed that he is
responsible for last year's increase in sales, corporate
and private income taxes. It has become apparent that
Thone also refuses to take responsibility for the already
scheduled increase in state sales tax for the second half
of fiscal year 82-83.
If our governor refuses to take responsibility for his
past actions is it reasonable to assume he will take res
ponsibility for his actions as a second term governor in
Nebraska? He has already given the voters sound reason
to believe he won't.

Students object to group
As UNL students we are concerned with the article
appearing in the Oct.5 Daily Nebraskan about the
Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles.
The article seems to stress that CARP is not a front for
the Unification Church.
From family experiences, we have found that CARP
is closely related to the ways of the Unification Church.
We hope that students will recognize that involvement
with this organization could lead to association with the
Unificaton Church. As stated in the article, the group
must have a faculty adviser to be officially recognized
by UNL.
If faculty members are aware of our concern and the
problems that may be caused, we trust they will refuse the
position of adviser for CARP. If CARP is to become a
recognized group at UNL, we hope that students, too,
will understand the principles as related to the Unification
appearing in the Oct. 5 Daily Nebraskan about the
Church.
