Nebraska picked to buffalo Colorado once again
For a sports fan this must be the best
time of the year. College football is in full
swing, the World Series is right around the
corner, and hockey and basketball will
soon be getting under way in earnest. But
since I only predict football, on with the
show.
Nebraska at Colorado. This is the last of
three consecutive road games for Nebraska.
It's pretty clear that the Huskers have
1 h Jeff
LJ Goodwin
improved over the last two games. Last
week's win at Auburn showed they are still
a legitimate contender for national honors.
Colorado, on the other hand, seems to
be headed nowhere fast. The Buffs did beat
Washington State earlier this year, but they
still have a lot of problems.
The Buff players and coaches have said
repeatedly this year that Nebraska is the
team they really want to beat. The last
time that happened was 1967. That was a
very long time ago. Lyndon Johnson was
president, Bobby Kennedy and Martin
Luther King were alive and the Beatles
were still together . But I digress.
The point is that the Huskers have
dominated Colorado for a long time - even
when the Buffs were good. This year
they're not even good. What this means is
another Nebraska romp - although not on
the scale of last year's 59-0 massacre:
Nebraska 44, Colorado 7.
Penn State at Alabama. Why this isn't a
national telecast is beyond me. (OK, OK, a
lot of things are beyond me.) Write letters
to CBS protesting this insanity.
Anyway, to the game. Both these teams
were idle last week, the only difference
being that Alabama played Arkansas State
and Penn State didn't play anybody.
Alabama is favored in this one and with
good reason. The Tide is very hard to beat
at home. But Penn State should win, main
ly because they've played somebody good
and Alabama hasn't. Add in the fact that
the Tide only beat Vanderbilt by three
points and you have a Penn State victory.
The only problem with this is that the
Lions have a habit of dropping big games
every once in a while. But their win over
Nebraska might have cured them of that.
Penn State dams the Tide: Penn State 28,
Alabama 21.
Oklahoma vs. Texas. Television is a
strange thing. More specifically, the people
who run television sports are strange. Take
this game. This is one of those big tradit
ional rivalries and, even though neither
team is as strong as they have been in re
cent years, it still will be a good game. But
it's not going to be shown on television.
Remember this when you're watching the
Army-Navy game which will be on.
Texas should win this. The Longhorns
Tranmer achieves ambition
of playing for Cornhuskers
By Jeff Goodwin
Every time Mike Tranmer runs out on
the field before a Nebraska home game he
fulfills a childhood dream.
Tranmer, a middle guard for the Husk
ers, said he used to dream of playing for
Nebraska when he was a child.
"It was exciting for me - watching guys
like Johnny Rodgers and Rich Glover,"
Tranmer said. "I thought there was no way
I was ever going to play for Nebraska."
Tranmer, a walk-on from Lyons, passed
up scholarship offers to play at Nebraska.
"I was offered scholarships by UNO and
North Dakota State," Tranmer said. "I
strongly considered going to North Dakota
State, but if you grow up in Nebraska you
want to play for Nebraska."
Tranmer said he is not disappointed in
his playing time this season in spite of the
fact that he was the first string middle
guard after spring practice.
"I think I'm still playing well. The
situation is fair. Jeff (Merrell) and Ken
(Graeber) are playing well. I don't have any
complaints," he said.
Tranmer said he thinks Nebraska's de
fense will continue to improve as the
season progresses.
"Everyone's wondering what our
defense is really like," Tranmer said. "We
played well against New Mexico State and
in the second half of the Auburn game, but
we let up a little against Penn State. I think
we're starting to improve. We're going to
come around."
Tranmer said he is taking the season one
game at a time.
"Right now I'm just concentrating on
Colorado," he said. "We can't afford to slip
up. If we work hard and concentrate, we
can do a go&d job this season."
Tranmer said the Huskers' chances of
winning the Big Eight are good.
"I think we can do it," he said. "I hope
so. The Orange Bowl is a long way off, of
course, but that's our main goal this year."
He said he hadn't set any personal goals
for himself this year.
"I know I'm not going to get ail-American
or all-Big Eight or something like
that," he said. "My main goal is just to
contribute to the team. I didn't feel last
year that I did that."

The Nebraska softball team will close
out its fall season in the Oklahoma State
Invitational today and Saturday in Still
water, Okla.
Nebraska still leads five categories of
the Big Eight football team statistics.
The Cornhuskers are first in rushing
offense, averaging 398.7 yards per game;
scoring offense, scoring 43.7 points per
game; total offense at 590.5 yards per
game; scoring defense at 10.2 points per
game; and kickoff returns, averaging
23.2 yards.
The Oklahoma-Texas shootout at
Dallas highlights the Big Eight football
schedule Saturday. Other games are Ne
braska at Colorado, Missouri at Kansas
State, Kansas at Oklahoma State and
Kent State at Iowa State.

don't have the offense they've had in
recent years, but their defense could stop
Rommel on a first and goal at the five. The
Sooners drop another one: Texas 21, Okla
homa 13.
Missouri at Kansas State. Missouri has
been unimpressive this year, but they are
3-1. Kansas State has been sort of impres
sive this year but they haven't played any
one. So what's a guy to do?
You can always say that Kansas State
will be looking ahead to Nebraska, but no
one in their right mind wants to play Ne
braska. So that doesn't work. Let's just say
that sometimes Mizzou has to start playing
better and Kansas State has to start playing
bad: Missouri 35, Kansas State 21 .
