Friday, October 1, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Page 13 Huskers need strong defense to stop the Tigers Last week's television games proved the superiority of college football to pro football. You could hardly ask for a more exciting game than Stanford's last minute win over Ohio State, except for Penn State's last-second win over Ne braska. But the less said about that the better. Like Papa said, "The sun also 1 & Je LJ Goodwin m r it x a. - l rises, dui mai s easy 10 say wnen your favorite sport is watching bullfights. Nebraska at Auburn. Auburn is an exciting town. When the football season is over, the people there like to sit around and listen to the crickets, a practice that's common throughout the South. Is it any wonder the South lost the Civil War? Auburn has a guy named Bo Jackson, who is supposed to be the sequel to Her schel Walker. I doubt that. Only God and Walter Payton carry the ball better than Walker. And God has a better offen sive line. Still, even if Bo is only half as good as Herschel - well, he's pretty good. The Husker defense will have to per form better than it did last week if it's going to stop the Tigers. Fortunately, the Huskers should do that. Nebraska has a history of coming back after a loss. The Huskers haven't lost two regular season games in a row since the 1976 season. So here's a vote for tradition: Nebraska 24, Auburn 21. Tulsa at Kansas. Kerwin Bell gets to play in this game for the Jayhawks. But it really won't matter. Not that Tulsa is a bad team. After all, they beat Oklahoma State, and their only loss was to Arkansas, which is nothing to be ashamed of. But the Jayhawks are thinking about a bowl game. Not the Orange Bowl, you understand, but some bowl. So they practically have to win this game if they don't want to be condemned to the In dependence Bowl again. The Jayhawks take the Cane: Kansas 28, Tulsa 20. UCLA at Colorado. The Bruins beat Michigan last week at Ann Arbor, which is roughly equivalent to the Christians beating the lions. (Not the Detroit variety.) Colorado, on the other hand, lost last week to Wyoming. The Buffs, from all appearances are as bad as ever. But Buff quarterback Randy Essington vowed be fore the season that the Buffs would beat Nebraska. He may be right, but it won't be in this decade. And they won't beat UCLA Saturday either: UCLA 35, Colo rado 14. Georgia at Mississippi State. This will be a dog fight. The Bulldogs vs. the Bull dogs. Georgia is 3-0 and Mississippi State is 3-1. With a win, the Bulldogs (Georgia variety) would take a big step toward winning the Southeast Conference title. Herschel Walker leads the 'Dogs past the 'Dogs in a game that is really for the dogs.
