Clinic aims to lessen math fears
By Dawn Watson
Math anxiety is "a form of anxiety where there's
a dire fear of mathematics and anything that has to do
with mathematics," said Matt Lambert, instructor of
a communiversity math anxiety clinic at UNL.
Math anxiety can include a fear of computers or
statistics, or anxiety about figuring gas mileage or
balancing a checkbook, Lambert said.
Math anxiety is a big problem for some people be
cause "they rearrange their whole careers so they can
avoid doing math," he said. Some people don't go to
college to avoid math, while others limit themselves
to fields of study that don't require math. Fear of math
keeps some people from advancing in their jobs, he said.
According to Lambert, math anxiety sufferers need
to jump two basic hurdles: They have to learn some

Opportunities abroad .
offered to UNL faculty
UNL faculty members wanting information on overseas
work opportunities can get it from the Research Council
in the Graduate Studies Office, Administration Building
412.
Earl Freise, the council's executive secretary said the
council announces opportunities for faculty members to
compete for outside funding for foreign travel.
In order to be eligible for the money, a faculty member
must make the trip to do research for a paper on his or
her area of scholarly activity.
Also, the Overseas Opportunity Center, Nebraska
Union 345, offers information of interest primarily to
students. But Judy Wendorff, program coordinator for the
International Educational Services, said if a faculty mem
ber "is willing to put in a little effort," he or she can find
some opportunities.

basic math skills and also realize that math "is a part
of their lives."
The clinic is divided into three main topics, Lambert
said. The first topic is the origins of math anxiety. The
class examines self-defeating attitudes and excuses about
math troubles, and Lambert said he tries to "refute
irrational beliefs" that his students have.
The second topic teaches students skills to help them
overcome math anxiety. Participants learn about the
physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of math anxiety,
he said. Signing up for a math class, taking a math test
or working on math problems are all situations that can
unnerve some math-anxious people, Lambert said.
Extreme reactions to math scenes can cause sufferers
to "lose their lunch" or faint, Lambert said. He said that
he teaches his students relaxation methods because it
is physically impossible to be relaxed and anxious at
the same time.
The third topic is a review of basic math skills.
The success of the clinic is hard to judge, Lambert
said, because he has taught it only once before. But
other math clinics have had "a very high success rate."
Nine of the 10 UNL clinic participants are women,
Lambert said. He explained that the high proportion of
women in his class and in other math anxiety clinics is
due to the cultural stereotypes that keep many women
from tackling math.
The clinic meets from 7 to 9 p.m. for three Thursdays
and began last week in the Hastings Room of the Ne
braska Center for Continuing Education. The enroll
ment fee is $20.
