Thursday, September 30, 1982 Daily Nebraskarr Page 13 Yes, Sunday afternoon football can be replaced The current National Football Iaone strike has brought up several not-so-serious questions. Like: So What? We, the tans, survived the baseball strike last year, and we can live without professional football for a few weeks this year. I find it hard to take sides with either the players or the owners. Pro football is an industry that's doing exceptionally well while the rest of the economy is j Bill Allen falling apart, and the players and owners are arguing because they can't decide how to divide all that money. I wish I had that problem. I divide my money between paying bills and satisfying basic needs. Occasionally IH spend money on a luxury item, like food. What's left goes to a needy charity . . . me. It's obvious that the pros don't realize what they have. I got really disgusted a couple of years ago when former Nebraska standout, Vince Ferragamo, went to the Canadian Football League because he Special teams Continued from Page 12 In order to be on one of Nebraska's special teams, Fischer said the players have to be aggressive and have determination to do a good job. On punt coverage, for instance, Fischer, who has coached at Nebraska for 23 years, said the players have to realize where they are on the field so they can get down the field and make an open-field tackle. "I think the key is to get a bunch of guys that just want to go down and give 100 percent all the time," said Murphy, who got his start at UNL by performing on special teams. Fischer said that while playing on specialty teams, the players have the op portunity to make a lot of good things happen of they give 100 percent all the time. "Being on the offense, it is pretty fun to go down and give somebody else a shot sometimes," Fryar said about playing on the punt team. Fischer also said that extra-point con versions and field goal attempts are the most coordinated plays in football. He said that the art of snapping the ball, handling couldn't make ends meet on $52,000 a year. On that, I could make the ends meet, the middles meet, and still have enough left over to buy that dream house I've never won in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. Anyway, to get to a point, any point, I want to help out network television (somebody has to). This past weekend, in the absence of NFL football, viewers had the dubious choices of watching a replay of last year's Superbowl or Cana dian football. Both choices were like a Playboy magazine without a centerfold. It's a Playboy, but not really. It was football, but not really. To help alleviate this problem in the future, I've prepared to the major net works a list consisting of ten substitutes for pro football on Sundays: 1. Show reruns of the old Green Bay Packers. It'll remind everyone of a time when football was football, not business. And winning meant games, not bonuses. 2. Have "60 Minutes" present a docu mentary on what the players are doing; during the strike. It will include Mean Joe Greene giving T-shirts to little kids, Roger Staubach selling Rolaids, George Rogers dealing drugs, and Earl Campbell chewing o o o it cleanly and placing it on the tee, fol lowed by a swift kick, takes timing and practice. "There is a lot of pressure on kickers, they might kick only once or not at all in a game, but they have got to be ready when the time comes," Fischer said. "They have got to be mentally ready to do the job at any time in a game." The Husker coaches generally agree that Nebraska's special teams are very good, but there still is room for improve ment. "I think we do real well," Fryar said of the special teams. "As long as we continue to hustle and everybody does their job, I see no reason why we shouldn't come out on top. We have great athletes here." Murphy echoed Fryar by saying, "Our specialty teams are very good. Irving can break it any time and our kicking game could be great." Nebraska's philosophy on kickoffs is to prevent the opponent from returning the ball past the 20-yard line. The coaches feel the opening kickoff sets the tempo of the game and a good kickoff is essential to a positive beginning. Sports Shorts League games of the Nebraska State Soccer Association will continue Sunday with two games at the Mabel Lee Soccer Fields. The Millard Stars will play the Arash Soccer Club at 11 a.m., and the Olympia Soccer Club will play the Lincoln Soccer Club at 1 p.m. Today is the last day for those who entered the Colorado Student lottery to pick up their football tickets. Everyone who entered the lottery qualified for tickets. The tickets can be picked up at the Athletic Ticket Office, South Stadium 1 17. The office is open 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. To claim their ticket, students must present their lottery receipt and their cur rent student ID card. Nebraska quarterback Turner Gill was voted the Big Eight offensive player of the week for his performance Saturday in the Husker's 27-24 loss to Penn State. GUI hit 16 of 34 passes for 239 yards while rushing 12 times for SO yards. Gill won in a split vote over Kansas quarter back Frank Seurer, who completed 25 of 37 passes for 260 yards and one touch down in KU's 13-13 tie with Kentucky. Get to the heart of your country. A whole Sunday afternoon could be devoted to a telecast of Howard Cosell telling everything he likes about himself in 2 million words or less. 5. Another Sunday afternoon could be a telecast of a team of English profes sors deciphering what Cosell said the week before. 6. Show an episode of "Fantasy Is land" in which I.M. Hipp finally makes a pro team. 7. Another episode of "Fantasy Is land" in which Nebraska loses a game on its own, without the help of the refer- CHARTROOSE ees. 8. A "light beer commercial" movie, starring NFL players. It'll have a third less talent than your regular movie. 9. A Jerry Lewis Telethon raising money to support the gamblers in Las Vegas who lose their incomes during the strike. 10. And finally, another "60 Minutes" documentary on the long-term effects of the strike. It will bring up not-so-serious questions. Like: So What? A passing thought (oops, there is went): I know of a hardcore Denver Bronco's fan who now has a T-shirt that reads, "I never missed a game, but a few missed me."
