East Campus library
gets carpet, shelves
Worn floor tiles were carpeted and new periodical
shelves purchased this summer for the C.Y. Thompson
Library on East Campus.
Lyle Schreiner, chairperson of the science and techno
logy division of UNL libraries, said the floor tiles were so
worn they actually could be lifted off the floor.
The low-pile, brown striped carpet covers half of the
main floor. It was installed by Stone Floor Service Inc. for
$12,000.
The carpet and the periodical shelves were purchased
with indirect cost funds from the university, he said. The
additions were the first renovation efforts since the
library opened in July 1964. The repairs began last May
and were finished in late August.
To reduce the space the old slanting shelves required,
640 periodical shelves were purchased from Wilson
Metal Products for $6,289. With the new shelves and by
redesigning the old shelves the number of shelves doubled.
Because of the new space, federal and Nebraska state
documents were moved from the basement and onto the
shelves. The move, Schreiner said, will reduce the amount
of time staff spend locating the documents for students.
Although periodical shelving space increased, in 1983
as many as 950 periodical subscriptions could be canceled
at the UNL libraries because of a lack of funds.
"As yet, we have canceled no subscriptions, but we are
afraid we may have to. It is tragic," Schreiner said.
The libraries received funds from the Chancellor's
Office to continue subscriptions through June 30, 1983,
he said.
Future renovation plans will provide access to the base
ment, which will soon house the four terminals and two
printers of the NEUROS AGNET (agricultural network)
computer system. The system is owned and operated by
the Biometrics and Information Center.
