Students work on gubernatorial race
"Student apathy is down, at least in my opinion."
said Bob Schuller, chairman of the UNL Young Demo
crats. Schuller was referring to student attitudes about the
upcoming gubernatorial election between Democratic
hopeful Robert Kerrey and Republican incumbent Charles
Thone.
Doran Matzke, chairman of the Collegiates for Thone
Luedtke, said students seem to want to be more aware.
Matzke and Schuller both said their groups are still
in the organizational stage of operations, but have been
distributing information around campus and the com
munity. Matzke and a spokesman for the students in sup-

port of Kerrey said both groups have distributed leaf
lets" at the state fair and around Memorial Stadium and
downtown Lincoln on football Saturdays.
In addition, the Kerrey group plans to sponsor a fund
raiser soon.
The Collegiates for ThoneLuedtke, which is a core
group of about 20 students, plans to do some public
relations work around campus and distribute yard signs
about town.
Schuller said that after Sept. 28, when the UNL Young
Democrats have their first meeting, the group will know
exactly where it wants to focus the majority of its attention.

Theft of wallets, back
packs and purses has in
creased significantly over
the last two days on cam
pus, said UNL police spo
kesman Bob Fey.
A pattern of theft has
emerged, Fey said". Leaving
a backpack or purse un
attended may be asking
for trouble.
"The key is leaving items
unattended," Fey said.
"When you are in an area
where others are, watch
your own item."
An attempted purse theft
occurred Saturday at Love
Library shortly after the
football game, Fey said.
A white male wearing a
red bandana, red flannel
shirt and blue jeans reached
across a table to grab a
purse. The owners of the
purse saw him, and he saw
her and left in a hurry,
he said.
The suspect is described
as 6'2' weighing around
200 pounds, with a black
beard and mustache.
