The Suburbs
Suburbs expanding sound
By Pat Higgins
The Suburbs have great haircuts. Their
music is pretty hot, too, recalling mid
period Talking Heads with quirky rhythms
and lots of synthesizer.
Hailing from Minneapolis, they have
released several albums on Twin Tone
Records, an EP, and appeared on "The
Big Hits of Mid America, Volume II."
The Suburbs will be featured at the
Drumstick tonight. They passed through
town this summer and chatted briefly.
"We started to play in clubs five years
ago but we'd been writing songs for a
long time before that," Bruce, the guitar
player, said.
"You can say that we spent some time
in the suburbs," Dee, the guitar player
and vocalist, admitted. "In our area electric
instruments were popular. A lot of bands
were there. We were just lucky enough to
be five guys who could stand each other."
Minneapolis has developed a reputation
as a Midwest musical hot spot with groups
as diverse as the Suicide Commands to
Prince.
"The scene in Minneapolis is quite
healthy. On one hand it's good on a do-it-yourself
attitude but then we don't want
to be just a regional thing either," Can, the
keyboard player, said.
"The problem is that you can't stay in
one place," Hugo, the drummer, said.
"You have to go out and break out of just
being a regional act."
The Suburbs are on the way back from
their first West Coast our .although they
have played the East Coast frequently.
"Naturally it seems like the bigger the
city, the bigger the scene there is," Dee
said. "However I've been pleasantly sur
prised by the scene here in Lincoln."
Suburban parents hang out at the
Country Club. Suburban kids should
check out this group.
