Communiversity offers variety
By Lisa Davis
The Communiversity program "Is unique because it
specifically focuses on the Lincoln communitv and its
need for non-credit education" said Chuck Havlicek,
Communiversity coordinator.
Communiversity, a program of the UNL Division
of Continuing Studies, combines the resources of the
university and the community to provide professional
and personal growth for individuals in the Lincoln area.
It was originated approximately seven years ago by
Quentin Gessner, UNL dean of Continuing Studies, to

enable area individuals to continue their education with
out actually enrolling in credit classes, Havlicek said.
In past years, the schedule of the program's courses
have run in accordance with the regular school year. How
ever, according to Havlicek, the possibility of also having
summer classes is foreseeable this year.
For many university students, Communiversity study
skills classes have proven helpful, Havlicek said, along
with stress-and tension-reduction classes. Also, classes
such as hot air ballooning and dancing, which are designed
primarily for pleasure, are . popular among students.
These non-credit courses may act as a possible indepen
dent study project for some students, which may aid
in regular credit courses, Havlicek said.
There are no requirements for, anyone wishing to enroll
in these courses. However, according to Havlicek, it is
helpful for students, before considering a non-credit
course, to "set their priorities in order so that they
know what they're after."
There also are no set requirements for those applying
for a teaching position because of the courses' non-credit
status, but enthusiasm, knowledge and experience in a
particular field are key factors taken into consideration
before hiring, Havlicek said.
"Also , a person's ability to relate well with adults
is important because they are our main group of
students," he said. Communiversity instructors come
from the business, industry and government professions,
as well as the university itself.
According to Havlicek, computer classes are currently
"really hot" and have forced open additional sections.
Classes taken "just for fun" are becoming popular, also,
he said but the organization just added new classes to
its business, industry and government sections, so it's
too early to tell how those areas are going.
All of Communiversity's income is received through
the class fees, thus making it sejf -supporting program, he
said.
