Army Reserve waives enlistee loans
In addition to its other educational benefits, the U.S.
Army Reserve will begin "forgiving" a part of the student
loans of eligible enlistees starting Oct. 1.
Sgt. Jim Vanderslice, commander of Lincoln's army
recruiting station, said the reserve will waive 15 percent
or $500, whichever is greater, of all eligible enlistees'
student loans granted up to or since their enlistment
dates.
To be eligible for this loan forgiveness program, persons
must score in the 50th percentile on a test given by the
Army, must be enlisted in what the reserve considers one
of its "bonus units" and must have had no prior military
service.
The reserve already pays
eligible college students.
100 percent tuition for
Vanderslice said that about 50 percent of those who
join the Army Reserve do so with the intention of going
on to some kind of post-secondary school. He said that in
the Lincoln area, students who enlist see the reserve's
benefits as a secure way of getting through college. Other
forms of aid, he said, are inconsistently available.
Enlistment in the Army Reserve is six years and obliges
a person to spend up to two months during a summc'r in
basic training, special training in a skill, one weekend per
month on active duty using that skill and two weeks a
year at a reserve summer camp.
Vanderslice said he encourages all those interested
in joining the reserve to contact his form further infor
mation. He said there are finer points that need to be dis
cussed before a final decision is made.
