Continued from Page 4 I&aeli leaders believe that the TV pictures of this war were unfair to Israel. I disagree. It is good for us to see what war is and what war does. It is good for us to see what military solutions amount to. The PLO did indeed hold the civilians of Beirut hostage . The PLO surrounded itself with schools and hospitals and apartment buildings. And that left Israel with a choice. Not an inevit ability, but a choice. Israel made that choice. To get to the PLO, it would bomb the civilians. Was the decision justified? Do countries at war every really "justify" such things? I do not yet know. I am still trying to come to grips with that. But I do know one thing. The results of that decision were terrible to behold. I saw the results with my own eyes. So justified or not, do not tell me what took place in Beirut was not awful. Do not tell me it is not a shame. Do not tell me it should not make you weep. It was. It is. And it should.
