Page 10 Wednesday, September 15, 1982 Daily Nebraskan Coach says Husker linebackers unsurpassed in quality and depth By Mark Krause John Melton, Nebraska's linebacker coach, has seen a lot of good linebackers in his 12 years at that position. But he said he never has had more quality depth than this year with seniors Steve Damkroger, Brent Evans, Steve McWhirter and sophomore Mike Knox as Husker linebackers. Melton mentioned Tom Rudd, Bob Nelson and Jerry Murtaugh as talented linebackers who wore the Corn husker jersey, but he said this group may be better. "As far as depth goes, 1 don't think I've ever had this much," Melton said. Hesaidallfouraresimilarplavers. "All are aggressive, they are fairly intelligent and they are rather durable," Melton said. "They have always worked hard and all have a lot of playing experience." Because of this, Melton said he is able to substitute without losing quality at the position. Melton said this helps keep the linebackers fresh, and McWhirter, who started on the strong side opposite of Damkroger in Saturday's Iowa game, agreed with his coach. "You don't get a chance to really get that tired," McWhirter said. He said substitution in the Iowa game "was done mostly by the quarter and we all played about the same amount." Melton said his players performed well in the first BASS AMPS: Sunn, Fender, Ampeg. Nick 464-7090 leave message if necessary. 1980 Suzuki TS100. Perfect condition, must sacrifice. McWhirter agreed with Melton and said he thought he played well but missed tackles at times. "They will hit you," Melton said. He said this year's linebackers are "very, very physical." "I think we all like to hit," Damkroger, the defensive captain, said. "We try to be physical. That's what it's all about' McWhirter said. "We try to be as physical as we can." With four good linebackers and just two starting positions, Melton said there is some competition. But Evans, who came to Nebraska as a fullback, said the players try to help each other. "We work together real well," Evans said. Melton said he thinks all three seniors will be looked at when the pro draft rolls around. As a group, their main weakness is speed, Melton said. "They are not the fastest, but they run as fast as they have to to get to the ball," Melton said, "and they sure like to get to the ball." Melton said that when the three seniors graduate, his job will be tougher. Only Knox, who earned a varsity letter last year as a freshman, will return.
