JBas winging around Capitol
It's common knowledge that the state Capitol is
the home of the various state government offices.
However, a few nocturnal mammals also have been
calling the building home.
Ken Fougteron, director of buildings for the state,
said a number of bats have made their homes in the
upper eshelons of the building. 'They like to build
their nests in some of the nooks and crannies up
there."
Fougeron said the bats have been in the building
for quite some time, but he was not aware of any
complaints about them.
"People get a little worried when they hear about
them, but basically they haven't been a problem," he
said. "The only problem I can remember with them
is "when we were building some air vents for air
conditioners up there. Some of them were building
nest in them, so we put screens up to keep them out."
The bats can be seen easiest when the floodlights
around the Capitol grounds are on. Foughteron said
he was not aware that the bats were flapping around
the sower figure as some passers-by have reported.
"I didn't know that, but it's entirely likely,"
Fougeron said.
Cherie Stasenka, a dispatcher in the animal division
of the Lincoln Health Department said 10 complaints
were made to the department about bats - which
often are infected with rabies - in the last two weeks.
"We did have a bat get in a fight with a cat
recently," Stasenka said, "and that's the most severe
problem we've had involving a bat this year."
Foughteron said the bats nesting in the Capitol will
most likely be left alone.
'There's really no reason to go up there after
them," Foughteron said. "They haven't caused us any
problems."

4-H displays at Fair
The 1982 Nebraska State Fair is displaying 4-H
exhibits featuring animal health and safety ideas.
The purpose of these new veterinary science projects,
according to Duane Rice, UNL extension veterinarian and
exhibit superintendent, is to inform the public of
common animal health decisions, as well as to assist them
in communication with a veterinarian regarding livestock
or pets.
Exhibits are designed to stress "the importance of con
sulting a professional before taking any action on treat
ment of pets and domestic livestock," Rice said.
Although the type of exhibits created by the youths
vary, most of the displays are photographs and posters.
The 1982 Fair is the first time Nebraska 4-H youths
have exhibited the results of their veterinary science
learning experiences at the state level. The displays are
located in the 4-H exhibit hall.
