Tips are appreciated
As a bartender in a popular college bar,
I wish to enlighten some patrons with
these suggestions.
First, we want you to enjoy yourselves.
Just the same, we like to have fun while
we're waiting on you. Here's how you
can help.
Say hello to your waiter, waitress or
bartender.
When ordering, a simple please and
thank you is appreciated.
Be aware that restaurant and bar
personnel do not earn minimum wage.
We depend on your tips to make the dif
ference. We work very hard, and our job is
often fast and furious. If you tried it
sometime, you'd understand.
Being college students, most of us
do not have much money to spare. A
little bit of generosity can go a long way.

Term said demeaning
David Wood's album review of Tane
Cain (Daily Nebraskan, Sept. 1) referred
to her as a "sensuous squaw." The term
"squaw" was used for Native American
women to downgrade them. We find
such terminology derogatory, demeaning
and in very poor taste. ,
Why Tane Cain is referred to as a
"squaw" is questionable since outfits
like hers are seen quite frequently these
days.

We only can imagine the feelings of im
migrant parents as their Old World cultures
were undermined by the New World
school. Their children brought home new
language, new values and shame. But they
were becoming, certifiably, assimilated.
Today, there is as much belief in the
need for education as ever. Last weekend,
the annual Gallup Poll reported that 80
percent of us believe schools are, "extreme
ly important" to one's future success.
But there is much less certainty about
"character,1' much less agreement about
national values. In the midst of change, we
argue whether our children should accept
or question authority, whether sex is a sin
or a pleasure, whether the Bible is truth or
literature, whether the state or the family
should control the access to children's
beliefs.
Every argument in our unsettled culture
comes eventually to rest at the school
house door. Inside, after all, we are form
ing the future. The bell has rung again, and
the wrestling match has begun again.
