Hie Encounter Center
services give a new
meaning to old bones
The Encounter Center in Morrill Hall will be adding
new displays and services for children and teachers,
Center Coordinator Kay Young said.
The center is a place where children can come and
explore on their own. It was established around 1980
to "enable kids to learn more about their environment
and the world in which they live," she said. Last year,
more than 47,000 people toured the center, with more
than 400 school groups participating.
The center's current displays consist of old bones
and fossils that children may pick up and hold, insects,
plants and diagrams explaining various life processes.
New services will allow teachers to check out supply
boxes dealing with current classroom subjects including
food chains, animal tracks and traces of past life and
life cycles, Young said.
Visitors to the center also can bring in objects
like old rocks or bones and have them "professionally
identified," she said.
The aim of program additions is to improve the use
fulness of the center and allow for a greater variety of
displays and subjects that will be available for children
to learn from.
Funding for the center comes from the Junior League
of Lincoln, Young said.
