Wednesday, September 8, 1082 Daily Nebraskan Pago 3 1 1 Kentucky governor stumps for Kerrey, business tactics By Rebecca Stingley "I'm proud to be a businessman, and what this country needs is more business people in government," said Kentucky Gov. John Y. Brown, Jr. at a political fund raiser in Lincoln last Thursday for Demo cratic gubernatorial candidate Bob Kerrey. Brown is best known in political circles for his development of Kentucky's economy. Since Brown's election as gover nor, Kentucky's state income has greatly increased with the new profits coming mainly from development and in creased use of the water channels available to the state. "Why, we have more waterway available to us in Kentucky than any other state in the national except Alaska," Brown said. "And the government's responsibility is to sell the resources of that state." With no prior political experience, Brown began campaigning only two months before the gubernatorial primary. His father served as speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives and ran seven times for state representative and twice for governor. Brown himself has been president and chairman of the board of Kentucky Fried Chicken and is a former owner of the Boston Celtics basketball team. Because of his business experience, Brown campaigned with a commitment to change government. "For economic development you have to run government like a business," he said. Brown said his economic problem-solving is two-fold; one can find the fault in the system or one can find a new oppor tunity. "Just because you have problems, that doesn't mean you don't have opportunit ies," he said. Brown said he is concerned that Presi dent Reagan has not been able to find either a fault or an opportunity. "Reagan had the best opportunity since Franklin Roosevelt to make a change, but as far as I'm concerned, he has taken the wrong path," Brown said. Brown said he thinks that Reagan has succumbed to the political pressures around him. "The Reagan program isn't working, and it is the governors who have to see the factories close and the people stand in line for unemployment," he said. Brown and his wife, sportscaster Phyllis George Brown, are traveling around the country making speeches for the Democratic Party. Brown said he hopes that the election of five or six more Demo cratic governors will serve as a check and balance to make the president and Congress more accountable.
