GLC plans voter registration drive
By Eric Peterson
A voter registration program will be one of the main
activities of ASUN's Government Liaison Committee this
fall, said Nette Nelson, GLC chair. The GLC works with
the Legislature on student issues such as the university
budget.
Nelson said the GLC state lirison, Andy Carothers, has
scheduled Sept. 13, 14, and XI as voter registration days
when the League of Women Voters will be available on
campus to register students.
Nelson said she hopes to get the College Republicans
and Young Democrats involved with the effort. She said a
lot of students think they can't register to vote unless
they go back to their home county, but this is not the
case.
"One of the confusions is that students don't know
that you can register wherever you consider your home to
be," she said. Nelson noted that postage-paid absentee
ballots will be available.
Heather Housand, GLC legislative liaison, will be bring
ing legislative candidates, to campus and will organize in
formational breakfasts with individual senators.
Housand is in charge of GLC's Adopt-a-Senator
program. Through the program a student chooses a

Nelson said one of GLC's major functions in the past
research into the university budget, now will be the pri!
mary responsibility of the Budget and Fees Committee of
the ASUN Senate. She said the change will help get more
ASUN senators involved in the budget process and make
the GLC work more closely with the senate itself.
Meri Blaylock, GLC media and informational liaison
will be working to get more information on student issues
to the outstate newspapers.
"WeH be asking them to contact us and get some idea
of student opinion," she said.
Nelson pointed out that information packets that GLC
workers took home to their hometown newspapers during
the semester and spring breaks has surprisingly good
results, with some students getting front page coverage.
The GLC will continue to work on the federal financial
aid cuts issue, which Nelson said is still very much alive.
"There's a little bit of trepidation, but a lot of relief,
because the cuts weren't as big as was feared," Nelson
said. "But the potential is still there; the president's
budget still requires larger cuts. We'll be continuing to
monitor that."
Laura Hein, who as GLC federal liaison is in charge of
the financial aid cut issue, will be bringing congressional
candidates to campus, Nelson added.
