Coach band director's jobs share similarities
By Christopher Galen
The director of the Cornhusker Marching Band readily
admits that the band and the Nebraska football team
possess many of the same winning attributes when they
perform on the field each Saturday.
'There are, I guess, many similiarities," said Robert
Fought, who is in his eighth year as director of the band.
"We try to recruit good people from around the country,
and thus we have a very consistent program."

Beach Boys may
appear at halftime
The Beach Boys may make a surprise appearance at
the Sept. 11 halftime show of the Iowa-Nebraska game,
according to Robert Fought, UNLmarching band director.
"It's really up in the air right now," Fought said.
"I was contacted by John Skold, assistant manager of the
State Fair, about the possibility of an appearance by the
group. They are scheduled to perform at the State Fair at
5:30 p. m. If they arrive in Lincoln in time for the 3 pjT).
start of halftime, the group might make an appearance
there, Fought said.
"If the Beach Boys do appear, they cannot perform
any songs because they are under contract," he said.
By coincidence, Fought said he had been planning to
do a selection of Beach Boys' music at the halftime show.

Though the musicians are taken for granted sometimes
by fans, the Cornhusker Marching Band is considered by
its members to be one of the best in the country at back
ing up the football team during home games.
Fought views his band's mission as twofold, he said.
"One purpose we have is to give support to the ball
players each Saturday, while also entertaining the crowd
at halftime," he said.
In addition to playing five Nebraska fight songs and
recognizing the visiting team with their school song during
the pre-game show, Fought has to please a mixed assort
ment of fans at halftime, he said.
'There are two basic factions, the younger students
and the older alumni. Plus I also have to keep the band
members in mind," Fought said.
He tries to mix popular music with older standards,
and the one common ground seems to be country-western
music, he said.
Fought also performs duties much like a football
coach. He. plans all the formations that the marchers
follow, and he choreographs their footwork as well.
The band has a contractual agreement with various
arrangers who write the music used during the games,
he said.
Fought then molds the music to the particular themes
of the shows.
Fought estimated that approximately 430 people
signed up for tryouts in the spring, with 310 people at
tending the band camp in early August. After a weekend
of drills, the final cut to some 265 musicians and flag
girls was made, and a week of five-a-day practices began.
"Band camp makes the season," said Dave Herbener,
a second-year member of the trombone section. "You
have to be willing to work. You're either marching or
playing from morning until night," he said.
But by the time a mock rehearsal is finished at the
week's end, the members of the band are ready to begin
learning the formations to be used in the fall shows.
"I didn't hear many complaints during camp, and I'm
looking forward to a great year," Fought said. "These are
the hardest-working kids I've seen, and they're very co
operative. I think that the talent we have is as good or
better than the past few years."
Besides performing at home games, the band also will
attend the Nebraska-Kansas game in Lawrence, Kan., this
fall. A 30-piec pep band will attend all other away con
ference games, Fought said.
