Last year's ASUN president, Rick
Mockler was the last ASUN president
to receive a salary. Theftew salary policy
went into effect when Wedekind took
office in March.
Mockler, said the official reason that
the regents gave was not the real one.
ASUN presidents have been paid for about
10 years, and there was no raise in salary
when the student regent position was
created by constitutional amendment in
1974.
The original situation continued until
ASUN president Renee Wessels' term
in spring 1980, Mockler said, when the
regents criticized the student fee policy
that provided funds to ASUN, the Daily
Nebraskan and political speakers. The
regents required a vote on whether the
funds should continue, and instituted
a refund system for those persons who
did not want to pay for the services.
"Frankly, I think their assumption
was that students wouldn't approve these
items in a vote," Mockler said.
However, students did, and only 0.5
percent of students had their fee money
refunded, he said.
The situation escalated when Wessels
turned out to be an outspoken student
regent, especially on the affirmative
action issue, he said.
"Several regents decided to eliminate
the student president's salary in reaction
to Renee's year," he said. "It was a vin
dictive move on the part of several re
gents. There's no question about that."
Mockler was told by one regent that
if there was an uncritical student regent,
the board would be willing to reinstate
the salary, he said.
The regents rationalized their action
on the grounds that the two positions
(student regent and president) were the
same. I haven't talked to any legal ex
perts who support that," he said.
Moylan denied Mockler s comment.
'That's a statement of . somebody's
imagination," Moylan said.
Mockler said "It was a petulant res
ponse to an outspoken student voice.
In a university, democratic environment
outspokenness is a good quality. Unfort
unately, we had several regents who
disagreed with that."
Mockler and UNO student regent
Florene Langford tried in May 1981
to reinstate the salary, using several new
legal opinions. The motion failed 6-2.
Mockler doesn't think the situation
will change until there are some different
regents, he said. "I don't think the board
is open-minded enough to reconsider
their action or even listen to a student
voice."
