Editorial
policy
Unsigned editorials repre
sent the opinion of the fall
1982 Daily Nebraskan.
They are written by this
semester's editor in -chief,
Patti Gallagher.
Other staff editors write
one editorial in" her place
each week. Those will carry
the author's name and title
after the final sentence.
Editorials do not neces
sarily reflect the views of
the university, its employees
or the NU Board of Re
gents. The Daily Nebraskan's
publishers are the regents,
who established the UNL
Publications Board to super
vise the daily production of
the newspaper. According
to policy set by the re
gents, the content of the
student newspaper lies sole
ly in the hands of its stu
dent editors.

As Judith Avener of the
National Organization for
Women puts it: "The policy
of the country is supposed
to be against discrimination.
The tax policy shouldn't
directly contradict this."
Under the law the ABA
proposed to Congress, pri
vate clubs would have to
pay up or open up. As a
compromise it was elegant.
Members could either stop
deducting their dues or
accept women and minor
ities. We could protect the
right fo associate without
encouraging the right to
discriminate.
The ABA, however, had
a change of heart or mind or
hand. It was helped by
some artistic lobbyists who
kept painting visions of
empty golf courses in their
heads.
If you remember,
Groucho Marx once
quipped, "1 do not care to
belong to a club that
accepts people like me as
members." It was a. lovely
one-liner. But with apolog
ies to the Marx brother, this
taxpayer doesn't want to
support a club that won't
let me belong.
