Wednesday august 18, 1982 daily nebraskan page 4.7 Fall preview shows 1st team quarterbacks are Gill and Mason By Bob Asmussen The Nebraska football team began preparation Monday for the 1982 season which begins Sept. 1 1 when Nebraska hosts the Iowa Hawkeyes. One of Coach Tom Osborne's biggest concerns entering fall practice was the health of quarterback Turner Gill. The junior from Fort Worth, Texas, injured his right leg last season in a game with Iowa State. The injury caused nerve damage which lessened Gill's mobility. Osborne said he thinks Gill has recovered. "I think he's got pretty much full mobility and speed," Osborne said. "As far as I can tell he's had no problems." The healthy return of Gill along with the recovery of redshirt Nate Mason from an ankle injury gives Osborne two quarterbacks with starting experience. Osborne has selected his starter. 'Turner will start the fall as the No. 1 quarterback," Osborne said. "Nate Mason will share time with him on the first team. Bruce Mathison and Craig Sundberg are second team." During spring practice Osborne used Roger Craig at fullback as well as I-back. He said he will continue to use Craig at both positions. "We're anxious to see if Roger Craig can do a good job at both fullback and I-back," Osborne said. The defensive backfield is one area Osborne is concern ed about. All four starters from last year's secondary have graduated. "In the secondary we have some good athletes but we're short on experience," Osborne said. Osborne said the Huskers are thin at guard. One starting tackle and one starting guard from last year gradu ated. The Huskers will return several starters. Osborne said Nebraska is strong at the receiver positions as well as running back and the middle of the offensive line. "We have two real good tight ends in (Mitch) Krenk and (Jamie) Williams," Osborne said. Osborne said the Blackshirts will be strong at defensive tackle, middle guard and linebacker. He also expects the kicking game to be good. Besides Iowa the Huskers have non-conference games with New Mexico State, Penn State and Auburn. "Playing at Penn State and Auburn will be a test," Osborne said. Osborne said all the Big Eight teams appear to have improved since last year. "Everybody's got a lot of people back," Osborne said. "I think the average is 17, 18 returning starters." Osborne said the one area he is not worried about is the center position. That spot is filled by last year's Outland Trophy winner Dave Rimington. Rimington has been mentioned by some as a Heisman Trophy candidate. "If they decide to break tradition and not give it to a running back or a quarterback he'd be the odds on favor ite," Osborne said.
