If you are living in a UNL residence hall
this semester, you must vacate your room
Thanksgiving weekend when the Oklahoma
Sooners and Nebraska Huskers meet in
their annual football battle in Lincoln.
Doug Zatechka, director of housing,
said that the office plans to close ten
campus halls Nov. 24 in observance of the
Thanksgiving holiday, and reopen them
Nov. 28. The Husker-Sooner clash is
scheduled for Nov. 26.
Zatechka said the cost of keeping the
residence halls open through vacation, or
reopening them the Friday before the
game, would be too great considering that
a large number of students will likely head
home anyway.
"Studies of the student population have
shown that 92 to 93 percent of the univer
sity students are from Nebraska. I would
guess that a good many of those are from
Eastern Nebraska and it would not be such
a great burden on them to drive in for the
game," Zatechka said.
The last time Nebraska battled the
Sooners over a Thanksgiving weekend in
Lincoln (a 20-17 Sooner win in 1976),
Zatechka said that students either made
the trip in, or found off-campus friends to
stay with.
"During vacations, we keep a small area
open for graduates and foreign students.
These folks are housed because it's believed
that they have an exceptionally long way
to travel," Zatechka said.
Other students pay $5 a night fee if
they wish to say during holidays, but
Zatechka said that fee would have to in
crease for the Thanksgiving weekend.
"Sure, there's a possibility we might do
that, but a small one. Then who says where
people are going to stay? We would have to
open all the dorms because we can't move
a person into someone else's room for a
weekend. That means we would have to
heat all the dorms, pay security. When you
start adding up all the costs, you're way
over $5 a night," Zatechka said.
"At the cost we would end up at, you
could stay in a motel a little cheaper. So,
while we could just have people pay per
night, I don't consider that a feasibility,"
he said.
And what would Greek life be like without the traditional paddle or plaque?
Certainly not as memorable. At Nebraska Bookstore, we'll help you create
those memories. There's nothing quite like our selection of wooden pro-
ducts-15 different squares and rectangles, 1 1 different paddles, 4 types of
ovals, and 2 types of key chains. We'll even special order customized
paddles in walnut or cherry so that you get exactly what you want, when
you want it.
